Lister 6/1 Bidding Frenzy ebay # 110076517091

I put a watch on this one a while back out of interest, but noticed today that is has gone to what I would describe as 'silly money' £498.00 or just about double that in greenbacks.

The other point which nobody may have picked up, is that it is a 1955 engine, not circa 1930's as the auction states.

I have just sent a message to the vendor, advising him that he may end up in touble if the buyer wants a really early engine, although the dating information is freely available and the engine number has now been put on the auction page.

It looks like the new stamped metal cover on it, I blew the pic up to try and see but it's pretty low res.  Interesting that the radiator fan is chain driven.  Mine is belt driven.  I wonder when the change happened.  it has the smaller, lighter flywheels too.  Nice it's been rebuilt, but short of tearing it down how can you tell?

Funny looking crank handle too!

The sprocket is for the drive to the cement mixer, the fan pulley is on the far side, away from the camera.

It would be a stamped metal cover, although most had that going back to the 1940's if I remember correctly.

The starting handle doesn't look at all like a Lister part, possibly one that someone cobbled up. Listers always had the cast handle with wooden grip, longer frip for the twins.

If you want to see a large Lister starting handle, get a 9/1 or one of the JP's, they are ginormous!

Cannot remember, but I think the nicely curved water pipes are later engines as well, earlier ones had a BSP tapped block with threaded pipes etc.

Hi Peter...I saw the 2 (I believe) sprockets on the "other" side of the engine and figured they were for the cement mixer but this is the picture I tried to blow up to see better but the resolution isn't too good.  It looks like this is the side that the radiator fan bolts on to and sort of looks like a chain although I guess it could be one of those linked belts.

Yes, mine has the swan-neck water inlet and outlets, they look kind of nice, also I have the 5/16" thick cast cover.  I think mine is 1949.

The side you have there is where the radiator lives. There is also some kind of coupling on the end shown. All of my engines have the leather ribbed belt too.

That`s a nice looking engine. I`d love to find an engine like that in that condition.  Take off the unnecessary chain sprockets and paint `er up forest green.

That leather belt looks about right on the last ebay engine.

Yes, it all goes back to the original stuff, Brammer is a UK/USA trade name.

Fenner's PowerTwist <http://www.fennerdrives.com/high_performance_composite_vbelts/powertwist_installation.asp> seems to be similar in principle.  I wonder which is more efficient.

For what it's worth, one of the great advantages to the "power twist" type of belt is that you can install it around a captive shaft (a lathe spindle, for example) without having to disassemble the machine. I have also seen them recommended for use on table saws--possibly for the same reason.
