X3 regarding 38ac

Also, I'd like to hear more as to piston clearance.....as below.

I don't have a measurement for the piston - cylinder gap on the CS 8/1. Do you have any guidance on this?
Are aluminum pistons on the CS engines thought to wear faster than on other engines?

What needs to happen, is we need to make Gale Banks aware of these engines. When he gets up off the floor from laughing, he might get interested out of sympathy and then you'll see him with a 50/1 engine on Youtube. He's put science and engineering to work regarding diesels. It would be a hoot...

I'd be very curious to hear the advantages of any port work on the cylinder head of a diesel engine that has a top speed of 650 or 850 rpm. The ports in the head seem to be of ample area for such a slow speed. Cam timing fine tuning on the other hand, at least to intended specs seems quite important.

Thank You for this info, every post helps me learn a bit more about the C/S design.....and it's idiosyncrasies.

FWIW when I fixed my Lister VA I replaced the original aluminum piston with a cast iron one and it didn't seem too badly off-balance; it just skated rather gently across the floor.
I realize this is opposite to what you are proposing to do, and it is certainly not running at 850 RPM but hey, nothing ventured nothing gained. There is a lot of info on this forum about engine balancing.

I was unable to free the stuck rings on the original piston, which is why I replaced it.

I have not run the engine very often, but I do have a new aluminum piston for it, when I get a chance to change it.

As you can see in the video, my son is standing on the wooden skid to help slow it's movement across the floor.

I am still looking for an original fan shroud for it, in case anyone has a lead on one.

32 coupe, can I ask what eccentricity you built into your idler bolts? Also, I'd really like to hear a bit about the correct location of the bolt, if you'd care to comment.

Thank You,
DK

Thanks Hugh, That is helpful. I couldn't get to it using the search function.
38AC's balancing method is here  https://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=6158.0
Unfortunately, the photos and much of the content is no longer available there.
I have no idea if it is available elsewhere. Wish I knew, as it was accurate and fairly easy to do.
Maybe, that most effective method will get re-posted and put into the WOK.
Cheers
Hugh

Thanks for the cheerful response. Sorry I disturbed your quiet time.
You can "search" for it the same way I would!

I have 38AC's balancing procedure. Looks to be a hassle,

I may have seen it in a post at one time, but didn't save it. Could you share the text?

I'd balance well, perhaps using the 8/1 aluminum piston. Otherwise the floor vibration could be an issue even for a well balanced engine. 38AC's balancing method is by far the best; he measures, corrects the angle and matches flywheel counterbalance first, then just adds or subtracts to the counterweights equally to get the best running.

At this point Bruce, where would Justin have access to 38AC's procedures?

I have a new zero hours 6/1, and 2/12 both with ST heads. I acquired them from separate owners in 2019. Also picked up a 'high hours' 6/1 W/ST head a couple months ago, none are in ready state yet, but being set up, so my interest in your setup is relevant. My thoughts are that, that muffler type is a good choice, because it has divergent passages that subject the gasses to direction changes. That affords heat transfer into the metal, so it can radiate into the room. And it's nice and quiet. 3-4KW of waste jacket water heat isn't much to shed. Your fin tube setup is interesting and I think very adequate, although I'm leaning toward a radiator with a fan to move the hear around the room a bit more. I'm posting this on the LEF also.....Thank You again.

Listeroid Engines / Re: New imported engine??
« on: November 06, 2020, 02:15:53 AM »

So I sent the seller a message:
How are you able to import this unit since import of these engines was banned by the EPA in 2010?

His reply:
I let my attorney and custom broker handle the details, I PAY THE BILLS. Not for the faint at hart. I had one go south 2 weeks back and it cost me 3900 to get out of it and i lost the engine on top of it. It is always a gamble.

WOWZERS!  :o
