Waste Motor Oil / Re: WMO load test
« on: January 20, 2008, 12:19:35 AM »
A short update on running a 195 at 1625 rpm. I ran it 5 hours last night at 5kw and all seemed fine when I shut it down. This afternoon I did the normal check the oil and coolant start it up for a short warm up and then 2.5kw for 30 minutes and then 5kw. Well I ran it for 2 hours and then shut it down for the evening and noticed a small puddle of oil under the dipstick. Oil level is good but I seem to have some higher than usual blow by. I think I have a carbon build up issue at the reduced rpm. I'll change the oil tomorrow and change the pulleys back and run the engine at 2000 rpm and see if the crankcase pressure goes down. I have a feeling it will. This is not a slow speed engine and here I am trying to make it one.

On the Cats the Marine engines use the energized to stop type and the Industrial engines are energized to run.

If it is the same type used on the Cats it has 2 coils, one for pull in and the second for holding at a much reduced amperage. The cat ones are rated for constant duty 24/7 forever.

Here is my latest test using 50% Diesel and 50% DELO 40w.  I was actually able to pull 10kw but couldn't control the water temp. I'm using a 3208 radiator with and electric fan. The radiator has 1.5" hose on the outlet and 1.250 on the inlet. The air intake starts out at 2.0" and grows to 5" at the air cleaner ( two 3126 in series). The exhaust starts out at 2.0" dumps into a 6" inlet and 6" outlet Nelson Residential Muffler ( 5' x 18") with 30' of 6" stack. There was plenty of rack left but at 12kw it smoked like a coal fired boiler in Steel town and the radiator was ejecting coolant like a fire hose. It would be interesting to add a water pump and turbocharger to see what it would pull. I have a feeling it would do 15-20kw. I'm wondering if the head gasket could stand the pressure. Oh that was with 2000 rpm on the engine and 1800 rpm at the head. I am currently running the engine at 1625 rpm and 1800 rpm at the head. This gives me a maximum of 6kw with lots of smoke but it is so quiet at this speed the sacrifice is worth it for now. The pulleys are 3 sheave using B series belts. Maybe come summer I'll dig up a water pump and install a turbo.

I imagine the Tata with a roid would only be available as a 1 ton Dually. The Tata with a Changfa would  be the sport model.

In an attempt to get myself back on track Hardy Diesel called today with my UPS tracking number. My starter for the 195 is on its way. Life is good once again.

At last. My own country. A proud man I am. I shall stand in the Round Bristle Brush forest tonight and light a match in celebration!

You guys are lucky, you have countries.  I have 433,000,000 bathrooms as my namesake.

Ever hear anybody ask " where's the Doug?"
How about " wheres's the Bob"?
Lets not forget "where's the Stan"?

Where's the John? Yeah, I've even said it.

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Waste Motor Oil Refining

I have some Katadyn survival water filters that will filter out all the germs that will be in mud puddles your drinking from during the end of the world saga. The filter is ceramic and the pore size is .2 microns. Wonder if you could use this filter and a hydraulic pump to filter out some of the carbon? You would not be able to use standard oil pumps. It would take 1000-3000 psi to get it through the filter. the biggest drawback I see to these filters would be the price of replacements. Might be cost prohibitive.

Bob G,
Your trust and generosity has restored my faith in mankind. I sent Bob a PM and explained the starter still works if I tap on it during cranking. The solenoid armature barrel is worn and causes it to hang up most of the time. I'll nurse it along until the replacement arrives on Monday. I contacted Hardy Diesel down in California and they are sending me a new "genuine changfa" starter tomorrow morning. The parts lady told me she will call me with a tracking number as soon as UPS picks it up.

Bob G. thank you for being such a good man. In the crazy world we live in now it's not often you run across people that still practice the basic rule of trust and willing to help out a fellow in need. One of these days we'll have to meet up for coffee and donuts and talk slow speed power generation!

Once again, thank you sir.

On the 9th I ordered 2 starters for my 195 from a company in Michigan. The salesman I placed the order with assured me they were in stock and would be shipped on the following day. He said he would send me an e-mail with the UPS tracking number as soon as they shipped. Late in the afternoon of the 10th I called to inquire about the tracking number and was told they were having trouble locating the starters in the warehouse. I called them the afternoon of the 11th and was told they would ship by COB. They were closed on the 12th and 13th. On Monday morning the 14th I called to asked about the shipment and was told they could only locate 1 starter and would ship it by noon their time. Today after not receiving and e-mail with the tracking number last night I decided to call one last time. The only person there was a receptionist and she said there were no salesmen available to talk to about my order. I asked her when they would be available and was informed by her that there was no one there but her and she didn't know when anyone would be there. I asked if she could look up my account and tell me the status of my order and she informed me she could not do that. At that point I had enough and told her to take down my name and cancel  my order. She reluctantly did so. What has happened to businesses in America?  This makes me sick. Any other companies out there selling Changfa parts?

I have 350 hrs on my 195 using 15-40 also. I don't think I would go with a lighter weight.

Those units normally have auto paralleling and load sharing built into them. They have to be one of the the most reliable generators ever made. We had one Saturn 750 kw unit that was put on line in 1968 and ran until 1984 when it was shutdown for a planetary drive failure. This was in a USAF co-gen installation in California. Total run time on the unit without being shut down was 140,000+ hrs. If you could make a turbine silent and get fuel economy like a Lister you would have one hell of a generator!
