Everything else / Re: Ant acid for lube oil
« on: February 08, 2007, 02:48:57 AM »
The problem I have seen with the few customers that have attempted to run Bio-Diesel in their generators is the injectors are failing due to lack of lubrication. Now , with that said we do have some customers that are running pure vegetable oils and even one major seafood company that is running fish oil in some cat engines. So far the fish oil is marginally successful (lots of impurities) but the vegi oil is doing pretty good. As soon as Cat figures out how to turn a profit with customers running bio-diesel then we will see some serious work by the factory to adapt our engines to run the bio-diesel.

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: More Changfas on Ebay

I've worked in this field now for 37 years and to be honest the only time I get nervous is when I walk into the battery bank rooms. I have seen the aftermath of a large glass cased battery explosion and I agree with you, it is horrendous! 4 large 12 volt 8d batteries on a 2000kw Cat is enough for me. I have 20 large 100 amp nicad batteries in my garage right now and have not decided if I'm going to use them or not. They are safer than the lead calcium cells but the amperage is still up there in the nuclear zone.

About 6 years ago I was doing a startup on a new generator at one of the local dot.com's and they had an entire battery bank and 30kw ups that was free for the taking. Only problem was I needed a 40' trailer to haul it away, and was living in an apartment. Needless to say I now own my own home with lots of room for things like that and of course no one is giving that sort of thing away anymore. Now more companies are putting these type things on eBay. Here in Seattle there is a company called Bidadoo Inc on ebay and even my company is selling things to them instead of throwing them in my favorite dumpster. Dumpster diving is not totally dead yet! At least that's what I tell myself. I still check them everyday for goodies. My wife told me today that I need to build the new generator building out of concrete instead of wood framed. Good thing I didn't buy all that wood yet. Looks like it's going to be a real nice building. She's a hell of a good wife. I think after 33 years now I'll just keep her.

No not telco, these are commercial vehicle inverters like those installed in ambulances, fire trucks, service trucks. They are made by Dynamote Corporation in Seattle. The ones I have are model # A30-70LD. They require an engine driven alternator for power. I rescued mine from the dumpster. Seems nobody wanted to spend the $20.00 it cost me to repair them. Both units required an SCR replacement. I have seen these on eBay go for $700+. New ones are around $1500.00

Wow, your really into this! Good to hear. You are much farther along than I am of course. I'm hoping to have the gen building finished in a couple of weeks then I'll get this contraption out of the garage and into a permanent setting. A couple of things I failed to mention. The 195 has a fuel rack limit adjuster on the side of the accessory drive face plate. I have increased the fuel limit a bit so this engine will make an easy 15+ hp. This applies to all diesels. Want more hp? Open up the rack. As long as you keep the exhaust temperature within reason it is a safe way to get extra hp for starting loads. Do it all the time at work. The other thing is I am running two 3kw inverters so that under normal load the engine will be down at the lower rpm (my fuel saver mode)with only one inverter on line. If I need more than the 3kw for the A/C or other loads that exceed the single inverter I will go to the 1800 rpm setting and bring on the #2 inverter. These inverters are powered by 150amp 0 to 120vdc Caterpillar alternators. The inverters regulate the alternator output at 60VDC and are not frequency sensitive so that is how I can run the two different speeds and still produce 120vac at 60hz from the output side of the inverters. Each alternator has a single v belt using the flywheel outer diameter down to the 3" pulleys on the alternators. The minimum rpm for the alternators is 2000rpm and 10,000 max rpm. So far this seems to be what I will stay with. I really don't intend to automate the system and will just apply the "kiss" principle. I actually ran the engine out of fuel today, seems 2 gallons doesn't last forever. So that only leaves me with 298 gallons left in my SHTF stockpile. Surprising how easy it is to collect a gallon here and there from changing filters at work.

Would you believe that was supposed to say 4.5 kw? with a little smoke that is. Exhaust is 495 degrees and coolant is a rapid boiling 215 degrees. Glad you caught that. It will pull 5 but the smoke is unreal! Now where did I put that turbocharger? I have to admit after working on the bigger generators as work everyday this is sure a lot more fun!

I just received a 195 from Carroll Stream on eBay. I know, it's not a Changfa, but this is for research on burning waste motor oil. I have it driving two 12 vdc 140 amp alternators that power two Dynamote 3kw 120vac inverters. I choose to go this route because I want to experiment with running the engine at lower than normal speed. It's rated at 12hp at 2000 rpm. After doing vibration analysis I choose 1100 rpm as the lowest usable speed with the least vibration. Of course when you run an engine at a slower speed than it is designed for you will loose a lot of hp. The most this engine will pull is 6 kw at this speed. That is just fine with me, it gives me more than enough kw for my house. I have only run the engine on #2 diesel and jp5 so far. I am still building the waste oil delivery system and will start testing that by the end of this month. I am also building a radiator system for this setup. Oh one other thing this engine was completely disassembled prior to it's first run and I have to say it is well built. Quality machine. I'll start posting some pictures once I get everything sorted out.

I have purchased a 195 that will be delivered on the 18th. I will be running this engine at 1800 rpm but would also like to operate it at 600 rpm. Your engine and mine are a combination of pressure and splash oil system. What this amounts to is the rocker arms are pressure fed a small amount of oil but all the other parts are splash fed by the rotation of the crankshaft and the dipper tube contacting the oil in the crankcase. Now as long as the engine speed is enough to cause the oil to splash around and lube everything then it should be fine. One other thing to look at is if the engine vibrates excessivly at the rpm you choose. If it does then just raise or lower the speed to find the sweet spot. This is my first Chinese diesel and it's going to be fun! I'll post results on my progress once I get the engine.

Changfa Engines / Re: Changfa?
« on: January 05, 2007, 03:06:15 AM »
Thanks for the info. That's a shame. They seem to be the only ones that are offering the smaller engines along with good prices. I spent many years in South Korea in the early 70's and these little diesels were real workhorses. Seem to last forever. One thing I did notice is they were not used for driving generator heads. They only used them for the 2 wheeled tractors and although they worked them hard you never seen them operating at high speed. Just seemed to lug them at low rpm, maybe that's the secret.

Changfa Engines / Changfa?

Does anyone have any experience with buying from Carrol Stream Motor Company? They have what appear to be Changfa engines at good prices. I want to order one of the small ones to tinker with.

here's another example of why they need to be secured to the floor before starting.

I think I've seen this topic discussed here.

I know when I get mine it will be securely mounted before I start it.
