Everything else / Three Phase to DC
« on: January 10, 2010, 09:30:21 PM »
I'm still on the hunt for a cheap method of getting ac onto the grid.  Here's a rectifier which seems close.  Those of you that actually know what the heck you're talking about might give me some advise.  Yes, I have enquired about other units on Ebay but this one looks pretty good.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130357875469&_trksid=p2761.l1259

I emailed the seller about the quality of the DC out and got this reply:

Quote
Depends on the load. This unit is rated at 60 amp max load - 50amp with connected-included fuse. This unit was/is used in Electrical Discharge cnc Machines. Although , EDM's require stable DC voltage to operate properely. This unit most of the time performs very well with most ac inputs.Depending on application, the AC input should go through a noise filter first. The diodes are replacable in this unit. Hope this helps

Am I to presume that the voltage out will be close to the voltage in and only uppy-downies are taken away?

Generators / Rectified Three Phase

Here's a rectifier on Ebay that I posted to Market Place and inquired about it being good enough to feed a net metering inverter?  Perhaps this is a better section.

Engines / "Real" diesels vs. "Kinda" diesels
« on: April 16, 2009, 06:06:40 PM »
My local small diesel engine dealer tells me real diesels, those with more than 19:1 compression, get better fuel economy and are better machines.  Is he just full of it or has he got a valid case?

General Discussion / War against the Oil Cartels of the Planet Earth
« on: April 06, 2009, 06:10:50 AM »
I was just over cruising generators and got caught up in a post by Jens.  Rather than having a dual interest thread I came over here to get this one started.  I'd be really interested in how you're doing in the war against the tidal wave wealth transfers to the oil cartels of the world.

I’d like you to disclose the following information:

   1.  KWH daily average usage?
We’re at about 60 KWH per day.
   2.  Your rate?
Down to 33 cents USD per KWH.
   3.  What’s your latest weapon against in the war against wasteful power usage?
         Turning the hot tub off.
   4.  What device, behavior or change has made the biggest impact on your usage?
It wasn’t turning the solar hot water heater off!  I’m still dismayed.

Generators / 3 Phase Rectifier
« on: March 20, 2009, 07:55:32 PM »
I spotted this three phase rectifier / welder on EBay.

How do you think this would work to rectify a 4 or 5 KW three phase generator so I can feed DC to a net metering inverter?

The shipping calculator looks goofy or scary but how would you get it to Seattle for Gordonsville?

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Is it a CD or a Witte

It doesn't take much imagination to figure out where someone got their idea for this Witte.

Waste Vegetable Oil / Over The Counter Vegetable Oil Preferences
« on: December 16, 2008, 03:37:02 AM »
Have any of you heard of research or reporting on over-the-counter vegetable oils.  How does Wesson stack up against Crisco and so forth?  Also what things am I looking for on the labels that tell me this is the oil to use or more importantly Not Use!

Waste Vegetable Oil / WVO Collection Site Sought
« on: November 22, 2008, 07:43:39 PM »
I've been invited to help design a collection site for WVO at a shopping center in Hawaii.  The site will serve two kitchens and will not be open to the public for dumping - just too many varibles to deal with.

I would appreciate direction towards good or excellent working sites you have knowledge of.

We would also be interested in some of the features that you think are important at a collection site.  Pros and Cons are welcome.

Thanks,

Casey

Original Lister Cs Engines / Con-Rod Babbitts Converted to Shells
« on: June 12, 2008, 12:38:44 AM »
OK!  This thread has to do with the CD in market place and so it is not absolutely a CS question.  Has anyone converted a babbitt over to a commonly found shell and how is it working?  What shell did your choose?

Would this result in a charge of Heresy or utterings of "Unbeliever"?

Generators / Baldor Super E Motor
« on: April 21, 2008, 04:21:43 AM »
The book "The Home Power Producer's Guide to Electrical Reality" where in the author, Bill Rogers, did some testing of a Baldor Super E motor as an induction generator.  The true Super Es seem to have efficiency ratings of 90% or higher.  Are there any other manufactures/models that I might investigate for this purpose?

Generators / 3 phase 35 HP Inductive Motor
« on: March 24, 2008, 09:10:52 PM »
A fellow wants to see me one of these - he has 6 of them - to build a net metering system.  I only want to create about 4KW.

Can I use one leg on a three phase motor?

Should I resume my search for a 5 HP quality inductive motor?

Cheers,

Original Lister Cs Engines / Start O Matic Electrics
« on: August 26, 2007, 12:32:31 AM »
1).  At what frequency do these 240 volt units operate?

B).  Can they be synchronized to our 60 hertz North America standard for net metering or should one just find a lonely engine and go from there?
