I'd like to know also............ an air compressor would be nice............ I'll start saving my pennies.

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Re: petter mod b1a

thank you guy's so much, for your in put.
I'll make sure that max rpm doesn't run over 3000rpm.
it will be only used as a back up, and occasionally as a battery charger when the lister 6/1 is down for service.
it sure is a little noisy er than the water cooled 6/1.
it would make a great minibike engine. ha!
i think i gave $ 200.00 i don't think i got hurt.
I'm just glad to have it running again.

well i got it running.
i didn't have to pull the head.
i started it with a 5hp gas engine, as a pony motor.
i ran it near full speed and heated it up real good. i didn't have a load hooked up to it though.
i then reved it up and let it slow a few times .
then as a fine mist, i spraid water into the intake with the breather off.
i let i run for a while.
after it cooled for a while., it starts like a champ.
luck was on my side.

OK some questions for some one that knows these engines. what is max rpm. what rpm sould i run it at for best fuel consumption?
i have a Dayton 4000 watt generator head i could hook up or a 10,000 watt harbor freight generator head.
i know the 10,000 watt would mach the hp rating of the engine better. bad thing would be the 10,000 watt is already hooked to my 6/1.
see i just got the 4000 watt head............but the 4000 watt head is better quality and best suited for the 6/1 listroid.
i think I'll switch them.
what do you all think?

i decided to get my 10hp air cooled b1a petter going again. just in case i need some hp to run something.
i took the tank off, and cleaned the biodiesel out of it.
i took the fuel system all apart and cleaned everything.
put it all back togeather and put fresh diesel in it and tried to cranh it up.
i got wore out and had to go inside to get cooled off.
when i was building my house,i was using this engine to charge batteries for my power.
it got to where i could not start it so i quit using it. pushed it into the barn, and would fix it latter.
well.,latter is now.
i know whats the matter with it. when i was tring to crank it up a bunch of carbin puked out of the exaust.
i really don't want to pull the head.[but i will if i have to]
i think i will use a gas pony motor to start it and if this works i will mist some water in the intake to steam clean the combustain chamber.
wish me luck............

Engines / Re: Slow it down

they are going to make the same noise , just slower.
some people have eliminated exhaust noise by burying a 55gal drum in the ground and running the exhaust in and back out.
when i lived in the city i just ran the exhaust 30' in the air straight up. neighbors didn't complain.
my views on rpm are that as long as you have somewhat of a load. you wont have a problem.
i have run mine at 350rpm all day and night. remember that lubrication is in my case splash. don't run it to slow.
i have yet to run my 6/1 more than 550 rpm's . belted my gen head to run at 525. i don't need any more power than that.
why run at max?

ronmar, that is exactly what i was doing with the 1/2" c/k valve.
the plate is already made i just need to tap the hole 1" now., i think i have a 1 1/4" foot valve for a well pump. this might work.
I'll get back and post Monday .
my cousin's have me busy on a float trip to day. it's been nearly 100 every day the past week and no relief in sight. good time to intertube float these cool Missouri rivers.
ronmar, what rpm do you run your engine?
i usually run mine betwen 450, and 550 rpm . mine is a 6/1 vihata.  when i have it belted to the generater head i have to run it about 550 for 125v a/c or 230v a/c .
i only use the generator head for pumping  [well pump] to fill a 1550gal tank that takes care of my water.
when i have it belted to the 24v delco 90 amp alternator i can run less, i back it off depending on batt. voltage.
when it's this hot, i have to run all night to keep batt's up.
during the day my solar array keeps up.

xyzer, and tom.,   some oil is blowing out the breather, but I'm getting some from the mains, cam shaft, and some from the lifter for the injection pump.
it's like I'm not creating enough vaccum to keep the oil in.
the breather doesn't seem to be blowing excessive amount of pressure out of it.  i don't think i have much blow by the rings.
I've tried turning the spring steel valve over and it helps a little.
i just don't think the valve is working as good as it should.,that's why i was experimenting with the brass check valve.

i have the same engine as you.
behind the inspection cover there is no shield.
maby i could ad something.

well i don't know how much com-preshen it has. it has around 1800hrs on it.
runs good. just leaking that black oil. not enough to add oil at oil changes.  just looks bad.
i usually change oil every 250hrs.
oh and i might add i just replaced the timing gear, it was wearing out. i noticed that the magnet that i put in the crankcase was picking up a lot of filings.
taking a close look the timing gear was wearing.
so i ordered a bronze one and replaced it.
another question is.........the new gear doesn't mesh with the cam gear as much as with the crank.
is this normal?
will an offset gear bolt take care of this?........and if i need to change the bolt to get it to mesh with the cam gear, where do i get one?

Engines / crank case vent
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:20:48 PM »
i am off grid  and in the summer i run my Lister most nights to keep batt. charged and a/c working. during the day my solar panels do the job.
my engine is leaking oil and making a mess. i was wondering if others had this problem?
i think my crank case vent isn't working properly.
so..... i thought I'd try to make a improved model out of a water ck valve.
i made a plate and tapped a half inch hole in the center screwed a shirt nipple in that and put the ck valve on that.
worked fine until the flapper got oily. then quit.
had to remove the new check valve and put the original back in place, so i could use the engine'
well it was worth a try.  i might try to grind some weight off the flapper.
any comments?

one question i have. to shut down the lister in case of an air flow failure, or over temp; would one put a solonoid valve to stop fuel flow? any comments on these two questions?  [from someone thats doing it this way].

yea thats what i thought i'd do.

what im doing is this; i have a trace 24v 3600w inverter. 48v fork truck batt; 8,100amp 12v batteries. i use a 24v delco 90amp. alt.[leave the voltage regulator in place.] also4500w gen head . make the system 24v. cut the batteries,[arrange them into two banks.] or three. charge the banks with the alt. every month or so run the gen head to supply power to the trace...need to equlize[ every so often.] you don't need a pure sign wave. i'm running on this set up now .[no problems.] no flickering lights this way. the trace has all kinds of charging settings, and charge at 70 amps,or whatever you set it at. your thinking to charge direct works great and having a gen head installed also is [in my thinking the way to go.]  good luck   it'll work fine.
