General Discussion / Re: Electric car question
« on: February 12, 2023, 08:21:26 PM »
I thought I'd post this:

He mounts a gasoline powered high voltage generator in the "trunk" of his Tesla. It directly charges the battery pack.
Conclusion: 14mpg at 80 and 24mpg at 50mph.

Many others have charged Tesla cars from portable generators. The results are between 12 and 29MPG. (Honda EU2000, Cummins turbodiesel)

While a Lister diesel is more efficient and diesel has more energy per gallon, the system in the "Cordless Tesla" video below did directly feed the pack during driving (a good thing for efficiency as it reduces battery in/out losses) and did not suffer from the 10+% 120/240V charger losses of the built in charger.

Don't get too wrapped around the axle with regard to valve depth. If needed, just grind the valves and seats to fit. Adjust the bump clearance to achieve the proper compression ratio. No biggie.

These engines are known to slobber (a highly technical term) when they have not been loaded heavily for quite some time. AND/OR if too much oil is placed in the valve area.

No updates, sorry. I simply can't find a reasonably priced Diesel Oxidation Catalyst.

Good Job! How about a new video of the engine in operation.

Mine never ran well with the COV set at the low compression setting. Kind of makes sense, as diesel engines run best with high compression.

$1000 for a 100 AMP 24 volt LFP ( or $2000 for 200 amps comparable to my current setup)

To replace my four 225 amp lead acid deep cycles, the total cost would be $800.

A huge price difference for 200 amp batteries.

I will have to look that price up, that seems too high. Just checked, LiFePO4 prismatic cells are still reasonably priced if you make your own battery bank. I'm seeing $108 ea for 280AH cells.

Even so, 100AH LiFePO4 is roughly equal to 200AH Pb-acid. As the depth of discharge limits on PB batteries is pretty severe.

This setup is really awesome. It takes the incredible capability of the Listeroid and couples it with modern technology. Really, the only thing it gives up is the simplicity of a belt drive generator head that directly powers a home. However I'm 100% convinced the benefits outweigh the downsides. I'd even bet overall system efficiency can be pretty darn good.

A combined heat and power setup like that could be incredible. And you can burn any kind of oil you want!

Very nice setup and thanks for the videos. It's one thing to understand what's being described. It's another to see a fantastic installation in all it's glory, and watch it function properly.

Take the cap off, and take some pictures!

Remember, the cap probably only goes on one way, so it might be a good idea to put a center-punch mark on the rod and cap to ensure correct assembly.

Oh that's a shame. Sometimes we feel like we know each other!

38ac, I figured you'd have a torque spec. In any case, thanks for the good information!!!!

I honestly do not recall using any shims on my engine. But that was 15 years ago.

The nuts must be tightened properly! The stress on connecting rod bolts is cyclic and they will eventually fail, "IF" not tightened to a certain level of stretch.

Put another way, once the bolt stretches and clamps the 2 pieces together, the bolt never feels any additional force, as the running loads are lower than the stretch force.
