Listeroid Engines / Re: How To Choose A Radiator
« on: September 10, 2023, 03:03:56 PM »
Consider a motorcycle radiator and fan. I have a first gen Gold Wing rad and fan on my uprated 6/1. It's quite compact, provides plenty of cooling capacity and has worked perfectly for years. No need to make a monstrosity when something from eBay can work perfectly.

The fan is powered by a 120V to 12V DC power supply with variable output.

Here is a video of my setup:

Air in the fuel lines, preventing a full injection squirt. That's my guess. Maybe you have a leak introducing just enough air on the suction side to cause this and it won't ever bleed out.

We've been using those relatively inexpensive "Grundfos" style hot water circulating pumps with good results. They run on 120v, take very little power and seem to be utterly reliable.

The Grundfos brand is prob top notch and will cost about $130 if you look carefully. The clones are about half that. I don't know how well the clones hold up.

I like the thrilling story. Not really unusual for these engines. Also illustrates why I went to some trouble to improve my twin's linkage.

Cool, very nice job! Also good to see the interest continue, as these old engines do have a viable place as back up power sources.

I do hope to see younger folks become interested in these capable engines. I've had my listeroid engines for nearly 20 years now, and used them a few times after hurricanes with good results.

Looks like an interesting project. I'll bet you can resurrect that beast and get it running again. Have you looked at the crankshaft and rod bearing?

Do they have the same form of splash bearing lubrication? Or is there a pump?

Really nice restoration!

It is good that somebody, somewhere can come through with parts.

I don't know anything about Bamford diesel engines. How do they compare to Listeroids?

I removed the change over valves and instead installed the inserts. No problems at all. The engine is a touch more efficient at the higher compression ratio. Otherwise, mine is similar.

Thanks for the update.

Very nice! I also have a bypass filter on my 20/2. I use a 0.032 orifice to feed it. I have it discharge over the poorly oiled section of the cam.

Should you power your EV with a Listeroid? Why not! Add in a nice solar array for sunny days and enjoy silent motoring.

I thought I'd post this:

He mounts a gasoline powered high voltage generator in the "trunk" of his Tesla. It directly charges the battery pack.
Conclusion: 14mpg at 80 and 24mpg at 50mph.

Many others have charged Tesla cars from portable generators. The results are between 12 and 29MPG. (Honda EU2000, Cummins turbodiesel)

While a Lister diesel is more efficient and diesel has more energy per gallon, the system in the "Cordless Tesla" video below did directly feed the pack during driving (a good thing for efficiency as it reduces battery in/out losses) and did not suffer from the 10+% 120/240V charger losses of the built in charger.

Don't get too wrapped around the axle with regard to valve depth. If needed, just grind the valves and seats to fit. Adjust the bump clearance to achieve the proper compression ratio. No biggie.

These engines are known to slobber (a highly technical term) when they have not been loaded heavily for quite some time. AND/OR if too much oil is placed in the valve area.
