Other Slow Speed Diesels / The National Has traded Hands Again.
« on: September 28, 2016, 10:38:21 PM »
So I worked out a deal dangling an older 10/2 lister under Butch's nose and left with his National, not without adding a little to the pot of course. It is such a beautiful and well built engine I just feel if I passed it up I would seriously be kicking myself in the butt later on. Once I got it home I decided I was going to go through it and tighten some things up on. I ended up getting a new wrist pin made for it out of 4140 hardened ground and polished, I made a new small end bronze bushing. Im getting the crank mains polished and the con rod journal ground round. I also put new rings in it and the first ring grove was a tad out of spec so I trued and widened the grove so I could run a .030 spacer. All in all the engine is in excellent condition but it had just been ran a little thats all. One thing I felt was interesting is I took the fuel pump apart to review the internals for signs of wear and it looked new, but hear is the the interesting part it has a 8mm fuel element. So in perspective Dads Ruston 1xHR has the same as my Listers 6.5mm, the displacement on the Ruston is 186CI and the National is 213CI. So its not that much larger of a engine to have that much more fuel going to it, maybe that explains whys its rated at 13Hp vs the Ruston which is only 8hp.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Lister 12/2 uncrating pictures

Here is a video of either the first or second run still mounted on the factory skid. What a fun day.

Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Lister JP3 27/3
« on: August 14, 2016, 01:49:12 AM »
So I finally picked up my Jp3 and WOW this engine is way bigger then I thought. I honestly had no idea and my tractor won't even budge it, So good thing my farmer buddy has a big ole john deere to help get it off the trailer. The engine seems to in good shape, it has been beat around a little I guess because of the sheer size of this thing making it a little difficult to move around. It runs but I can here a little bypass from two of the cylinders when turning it over slowly and it does smoke a little. So my needs have changed since I gave the commitment to the gentleman I bought it from a few months ago so I decided to put it up for sale.
I will take some pictures tomorrow when I get a chance.
Im not looking to make a penny on the engine but I did probably pay to much for it, maybe because I was so excited to find one . But anyway I paid $1500 so thats what im asking
My only trade interest would be a Ruston Hornsby diesel preferably on the smaller side.

Great information there I actually didn't realize that the 10/2 was the most rare of the bunch, makes my recent purchase a tad more justified. I will be posting detailed pictures once it's in my possession.

Even with the conversion rate I would pay more than twice that, to get my hands on that piece of Gold

I would have thought with the post BREXIT currency correction, IRO 15% drop in the GBP / US$. Something like this would now be even harder to resist.

Not so many of these around in unmolested condition anymore...

Quite correct, because from information I now have concerning the total Lister CS production numbers, you will see below how twin cylinder production levels compared to the total number of engines produced:

Out of a total Lister CS engines produced circa 413,000

The following figures breaks it down further, into the twin cylinder variants:

Percentage of total twin cylinder engines           15.27%   i.e. 1 in every 6 engines
Percentage of 10/2 Engines                            0.513%   i.e 1 in every 200 engines
Percentage of 12/2 Engines                            9.39%   i.e. 1 in every 11 engines
percentage of 16/2 Engines                            4.97%   i.e. 1 in every 20 engines.

Clearly the 10/2 is the rarest of them all, and not surprisingly for the same reason the 3/1 is the rarest single cylinder engine, with fewer than 250 produced.

Furthermore considering that the majority of the twin cylinder engines were exported, you can now begin to see why they attract a price premium over the single cylinder engines in the UK

shipping and handling within/from the UK tends to be a minefield though.

But it is still possible, as you and other forum members have demonstrated. Forgive my lack of understanding, but once the process is understood, you merely have to repeat that with minimal variation the next time, or am I missing something?

I understand there can be curve balls introduced by US customs :police:, if your container is selected by them for special treatment :'(, but again once that process is understood, its just another step in the sequence of events to be aware of.

The same theory applies to the Emergency stop circuit on a CNC machine,  normally closed. So in the event of a broken wire of faulty switch it alarms the machine out rather then on a normally open circuit with the same issue the machine will never sence it and when the part pulls out of the vise and is working on getting up to spindle speed and you finding out the E stop button doesn't work.
I concur with the Energized to Run methodology. Some manufacturers used an energized shutdown control system, but those were complex and less reliable. Lister has used a simple Energized to Run safety fuel control solenoid for decades.

Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Re: Lister L on Ebay
« on: July 27, 2016, 09:44:15 PM »
No harm done I was just mentioning the ebay auction for bs sake, glad it went the direction it did!! The pictures on my phone didn't do that trailer load justice! It would have been ashamed if you made a wrong turn and ended up in MD. ;D don't worry I would have been there to help you out if you didn't want to take it all back with you.
No, all of  my non-diesel Listers are  Canucks. The balltop L came from Saskatchewan, the TL and the D came from Ontario. The Amish used American built gasoline engines for the most part until they started using Hondas 25 years ago., at least the one's around here.

Yesterday we moved the last load of engines to the new place. FINNALY! I have all my stuff at one location.  The little D is on the back, TL up front. The engine in the middle is a 8HP  Bamford diesel that came from near Arthur ILL. and was Amish owned.  Sorry for kinda hi-jacking your thread Jake.

Check out page 6 they have over voltage , under voltage , and both on there.

Take your pick
http://www.crompton-instruments.com/downloads/2015/EPP-2040-1115_protectors_201115.pdf

Thanks for all of the instructables This is great stuff....

Looking at the link to Crompton Instruments I did not find any plain voltage monitors but phase and voltage monitors. The one that I believe applies best to my  10HP, 7.35KW, SINGLE PHASE LISTEROID is

  PSF/G3-173/240  http://www.crompton-instruments.com/downloads/2015/EPP-2040-1115_protectors_201115.pdf

Do you think this will work with my single phase generator?

Thank you ....

I guess that discredited the (very likely the only one in the USA) part of his description.

If that one sells for the buy it now price I will have two Ls for sale shortly ;)

I would suggest a voltage monitoring relay over a frequency style, in that link there is plenty to chose from. Ive never actually messed with the frequency relay on a slow speed but it makes since how it wouldn't work well with it. I was going to set one up on my small yanmar homemade generator for a two speed throttle using a solenoid.

So what you need is a Frequency monitoring relay with adjustable hysteresis, I will work on finding a part number that would work and send you the link.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Listeroid Governor Control
« on: July 18, 2016, 10:10:07 PM »
Gary are you using PG controls?
On our commonly installed larger gensets we use an electronic governor product that uses a magnetic pickup... has adjustments for frequency selection and sensitivity and droop, uses a very small actuator on the fuel pump and augments a mechanical governor in a somewhat similar fashion to what has been shown here. The idea is sound and proven. The off-the-shelf hardware costs quite a bit though. If I remember rightly, about $300 for the control, plus additional for pickup and actuator.
