Hi Ed

Found yours, Nice, but what are they for?

Thingummies is nice but vague!

I made my hollow dipper from an old bolt with a cordless drill, hack saw and a file

I'd love a lathe, best I can do is the drill press and a 1mm slitting disc in the angle grinder.

If there's anyone south of Limoges with one too many.........

I'll try something else......

Cheers Stef

PS. Basil looks like the way ahead!

Hi Ed

I can't see the images, is it because I'm using a Chromebook, or am I still crap at this Etech stuff?

Anyway, here, hopefully are a couple of pics of the dipstick I promised Butch I'd make. I knocked it up with a cordless drill, bench grinder, some emery cloth and a set of taps from Lidl (like Walmart, only cheaper!) out of a bolt from a French 'sleigh' bed, around 100 years old.

Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / Re: Listeroid set
« on: January 11, 2017, 07:26:29 AM »
Hi Ron

Seems there's quite a few popping up on Ebay UK as well, I'm sure there's a cycle in all things, maybe the Lister curve is at the lower end?

Land Rovers - in which I also have an interest - are near the top of their's, all the 'wise ones' are trumpeting how rare they are now that production has stopped, quite a few 50's models requiring restoration worthy of a Bugatti are being shipped over from Aus, opportunity for you, Glort?

Maybe I should be touring the UK and scooping up the Lister bargains as a hedge against the Brexit shaped hole the UK is said to be risking!

Cheers
Stef

Possibly the best post on this site yet, totally vindicates my view on the sites humour.

Nice set up.

I'd be interested to know how the led multi purpose meter hold out, I,m considering using them to monitor the output on the 3 x 220v phases of my alternator, they look well Gucci, and are cheaper than chips on Ebay.

The quesrion is will they thrive in the heat and vibration?

I missed it too.

As Butch said, you don't have to read the bits that get up your locker, by far the larger part of the site is informative, helpful, amusing and occasionally funny.

Most of us mind our P's and Q's and as a result the threads are interesting and diverse with little interference  required, long may it continue, +1 for the unsung moderators.

Hi All

Thanks for all that, sorry I'm not as switched on as I should be, mind you I'd not be asking questions and cluttering up the site if I knew what I was on about in the first place!

Sadly I doubt you've heard the last of me!

I'm thinking I'll leave it as a 3 phase unit, then if I ever get my hands on any 3 phase workshop equipment I'll have power to hand.

I've got the Lister running as well I envisaged, there's one or two little jobs to tackle - at the least a dipstick, Butch! and the rad I begged out of an LDV van to fit and plumb, then I'd like to fit a starter (all suggestions welcome!) and get my electronically gifted mate to knock me up a 'Startomatic' type set up.

Some time over the next few months I'll try for another video on Youtube, just to secure the bragging rights!

Cheers Stef

Nothing wrong with a bit of superstition, Ron

I count magpies, bless those who sneeze, won't pick up a dropped knife, put shoes on the table, walk around ladders and Lord knows what else.

Most of them are based on something, shoes on the table is very Northamptonshire, where I come from originally, where for many years everyone was involved in the boot and shoe industry, and probably means that you'd be showing the neighbours that you were poor and did 'outwork' to make ends meet,
Around your way having something to eat after Christmas may well have been a luxury for some folks and showed that you were set up for the lean months 'til spring.

Anyway, superstition has got me through the thick end of 62 years so far, I ain't stopping now, touch wood!

Hi Both,

Thanks for the replies.

Mark,

it's not a typo, just my inability to express myself concisely!
I have a frequency meter, rated at 100v between 1 phase and neutral, this is where my readings come from, the ammeter only works on one of the phases, as does the volt meter. The rev counter is a home made device which picks up on 4 magnets on the camshaft retaining collar, via a Hall effect switch, powered by a 9v battery. A mate made it for me, electronics are pretty much beyond me!

Gary,

Yes, it's an SX 460 AVR, well that's what the label says...
There was a sticker inside the control box which I took the precaution of photographing before disturbing it to relocate the gauges. I've laminated it so it can carry on providing a permanent record on the machine.

It's nice to know that if I over load things in a fit of exuberance that it'll all shut down before the magic smoke escapes, it's a shame more things in my past haven't been so well protected!

I intend to fit a rotary switch in order that the ammeter serves all three phases, to help with (future) load balancing between the 3 phases, however am I correct in assuming that given the size of the gen head that if it all ends up on one phase I won't damage anything?

Thanks again,

Stef

Generators / Alternator test
« on: January 01, 2017, 12:00:56 PM »
Hi All

I've fitted the 8kva Stamford Newage alternator with a frequency meter - 50 Hz and 100v, at 620 rpm it's showing 51 hz, with no load. its driving through a polyvee belt off the flywheel rim.

Plugging an electric kettle in to any of the three phases, each one has its own socket, drops the revs 15 rpm or so for 5/6 seconds then they build up to 617 and hold steady, with 50Hz, 9 amps on the meter and 218v.

Is it possible, advisable, worthwhile or sensible to tinker with the AVR to up the voltage to 220v or do I leave well alone?

As the alternator will produce more than the Lister, nominally a 6/1, how much load should I try as a max power test with out endangering the AVR etc as the revs drop?

All advice welcome, usual caveats apply!

Cheers Stef

Update!!

So i was in the attic over the shed today......

After a year there's about 3/4" or 20mm in the lower container, and it's much the same colour as the oil in the upper container, them farmer boys must have had time on their hands.

Further reports in due course............

Cheers Stef
