To me it looks like an oil pressure switch or engine temp sender

Is there any teeth for a starter motor on th flywheel? I am not sure if an electric start is suitable for cam shaft only crankshaft.

You will realise that these Lister engines are over designed to take a very hard life. My 8hp should have died years ago and withy a bit of tlc it runs like a clock again and if it was a modern engine it would be in the scrap bin. Good luck with it and hope it is as simple as a gasket.

Hi mate, What was the outcome of that other post where you found a similar issue, maybe try that?
If you have a water leak from around the head gasket area remove the head to confirm that none is getting into the cylinder as that will destroy a piston at best. Ignore it and it might bite you while motoring somewhere and I know I dont like rowing anywhere. Even if you find that the water is not getting inside at least you know it is good there.
Is the oil level rising in the sump? If so you know the head gasket must be done. Good luck in getting it working properly again and keep us informed.

Also measure the opening of the keyway as there should be  a slight difference from inside to outside because of the taper of the gibb head key.

Glad your back. I think the same happened last year. You would think they would end an invoice or reminder. Love the Forum.

It would help with more info like where in the world you are and a general location. No good offering replies if your not local to any who reply.
So to quicken up the process start contacting your local Marine shops. If in the UK there are many who do the Listers so high chances Blackstone knowledge should be had as well.

I too had some challenges removing old gibb head keys. In both cases the head broke off one level with the crank the other just inside. In the end I drilled them out as they are only a type of mild steel so easy to drill. Once I had it looking like swiss cheese I collapsed the remaining parts and picked it out.

Hopefully that is all that was wrong and that it stays in working order. Not sure where abouts you are in the world but if you do need another coil they are readily available from any magneto rebuilder. Ring around as prices will vary.
I have a supplier here in Australia that rewinds his own product and seals it and posts very quickly for a very good price.

Glad it is running again. What do you think the issue was, just water ingress?

What a beauty ! You have made the "German" look and sound better than the ever did, very well done VP.

Hope your festival goes well. I would consider a paint job on the plastic tank o make it look as if it is metal or same as th engine. You have done a wonderful job on your German and has been a pleasure to follow the progress and the dedication to making it perfect again. Well done  VP!

Go to Youube anf watch some clips there to show you how to test both condensor n coils. I have tested and replaced  a few SR1 n RS1 coils after they failed the tests.
A good coil in generalshould read. from HTR lead to ground - 3800 - 5000k on 20K setting on your meter.
Secondary should read from secondary winding wire to groun - 0.3 - 0.6 Ohms on 2K setting.
Some meters now are automatic in selec ting the correct range but my old bastard is a manual one. I think to test your condensor it is a different method from as you described, but I might be wrong. Now days I have a bench top testing meter that tests all types of magnetos plus will heat the coil to operating temps to test again looking for tracking or internal arcing inside.

The product looks superb. Glad they made them to spec for you which sometimes can be an issue. Were they made in various sizes in oversize or all standard?
