Thanks for the info update. I sent some pictures to the email address of Gary (dieselgen) and he has come to the same
conclusion and that is the recess for the o ring has been machined on the wrong valve. This is the same on both heads.
As I have owned this unit for many years I will just put it back as I found it because I haven't had any problems with it.
I guess if it became a problem I could easily get the reccess machined around the inlet valve guide easily enough. I was
just trying to do it properly !!!

Thanks for your time,

Best regards, Blue

I just can't work out how to upload a picture of the cylinder head.
Nor can my daughter or wife, who are more computer capable than I !!!

The machined groove in the head is there sure enough where the guide comes through. And sure enough it is only on one side. BUT it is the exhaust valve guide. Looking at the top of the head from the push rod side it is the right hand valve (marked exhaust and smaller than the inlet). I was trying to attach a picture but having lost this reply twice have given up. Even my teccie daughter couldn't get it done!. It is furthest from the breather pipe and closest to the feed from the oil reservoir outlet cast between the manifolds and the valves. Also it is the valve which is NOT on the manifold with the threaded hole for the cold start oil cup. What does this seal do anyway? On the inlet side it would prevent oil passing between the guide and head and entering the flow of air into the cylinder where it would get burnt at the worst. On the exhaust side it would prevent exhaust gases coming up into the rocker cover or oil entering the exhaust where it could ignite. Don't know which is more important and why Lister didn't just put seals on both sides.

Thanks

Blue

I am rebuilding an ST2 which is connected to a 220v.d.c. welder turning @ 3,000 rpm. I just ground in the valves and looking in the parts book I have it shows a seal and large washer under the inlet valve spring. On my head there is no machined area for an o ring to fit down into on the inlet side BUT there is an obvious place machined into the head on the exhaust side. Whichever way the large flat washers are missing. Anyone know anything about this, would be pleased to hear.
