Engines / ST didn't start
« on: October 05, 2014, 10:37:23 PM »
I returned from a break overseas and thought I had better just check my ST1 stand by generator. Fuel in the tank (engine mounted), oil in the sump (at about the correct level; it is an ST after all !!!) and no debris around the cooling areas (courtesy of anolis lizards). So I gave it a crank only to be greeted by silence, no injector squeak !!!
Question, how can it lose it's prime when there is fuel in the tank ? Only solution I can think of is a leak in the delivery valve / element of the fuel pump. Or the fuel pump stuck in the delivery position.
It started and ran (and bled itself) with the smallest hint of easy start and has been perfect since. Am I missing something here ?

Your engine bed is sounding good now. Fairly standard in yachts and the like. Prime and paint the steel, tap holes in it to secure the engine mounts and it will last as long as you will ! You can cover most of it with fibreglass to bond it to the hull and also slow the rusting process.

A radiator will keep it nice and warm down below and in a warm environment it turns into hot down below. A simple centrifugal pump and keel cooling would be my choice. Get that heat out of there.

Good luck

www.aetnaengineering.com  These guys make tacho's for any use, check 'em out. Might be a bit late for your project tho'. I replaced an old unit on a large Alpha, 500 hp 2 stroke diesel with two of these (one in the engine room and one on the bridge) and it served perfectly until I sold the ship years later and, for all I know, may still be working today !!!

Probably made in China, they don't worry too much about copyright.

I have to go to the UK in about 3 weeks time and wondered if anyone there is needing used HR parts. I have 2 cylinder heads (complete as they came off), fuel pumps, injectors, push rods, rocker covers etc. Mostly top end stuff. Give me a shout. They came off 2534HR2A23

I ran two of these engines for a few years in a tug linked together through a single gearbox onto a single prop. Model ERS8M 600 hp @ 750 rpm. We had to install a new crankshaft in one when we bought it as we couldn't get any oil pressure. After that we changed the oil pump for a longer body pump which pushed more oil and then it ran for years. Those big black doors hide all the fuel pumps which sit in brass trays which supposedly catch any leaking fuel and drains it to a small container by the flywheel thus avoiding oil dilution, which as lots of you know can be a problem with Lister's ! Very fuel efficient but we spent a lot of time pulling heads and valve grinding but it was working hard. Cracked a few heads too, overheating. Used to get parts from R.E. Trem in the U.K. Eventually the water jacket in the turbo casing went allowing water in to the air passages. Bore 222 mm x stroke 292 mm. Used to throw oil around rather a lot too in good British tradition.

The wiring diagram is still there in the Lister engine gallery, user albums, Ian Cox

I posted a wiring diagram for a 415v 3 phase Allam generator in the gallery under the album of Ian Cox. It was for a 7.5 kw but hey, it's close !!!

I used to have 3 Stamford units of 35 kva each with permanent magnets fitted to ensure a start up voltage for the exciter circuit. The only problems I ever had were with the AVR's including a bad one direct from Stamford USA (which they refused to replace). So I would definitely try a cheap and cheerful Chinese look alike as they all seem to give up the ghost for a pastime; usually when it's most inconvenient to you.

Guess all those mods and machining jobs haven't quite given the desired effect and now to cut his losses it's 'gotta go'.  ;)

Why anyone would be interested in a 3600 rpm screamer is beyond me. Especially with a dubious pedigree. You would need about 2 acres to mount it somewhere that you could still speak and hear on the property. There are zillions of similar engines already EPA approved which you can get parts for. Again WHY?  ???

Whatever model it was, there ain't a lot left. Pump diaphragm may need replacing too  ;D

It's a lot easier to do properly with the housing removed.  :-\
