General Discussion / Fuel filter recommendation please
« on: December 31, 2020, 10:56:59 AM »
I'm looking at getting a "better" fuel filter system for my Perkins 402d-05 engine. Currently, I have the typical pleated filter in the little plastic housing (with the shut off lever) but was looking at a genuine Perkins filter set up. I was all set to buy this an noticed in the description that is said..."complete secondary fuel filter". So now I'm confused. Do I need an additional fuel filter in my system? This was going to be my primary (and only) filter.

Generators / ST Generator Head Question
« on: December 24, 2020, 07:45:35 PM »
I'm finally putting my Perkins/ST head together and have a question about ST heads in general. I know that typically you don't want to exceed 80% of the rated output of your head for long periods. Is this true for the massive ST heads? I have one of the old Power Solutions heads sold by George via Utterpower. It weighs well over 200 pounds (7.5 kw). I've read that these will run continuous for days and never get warm. So, can I run this at 7.5 continuous or should I down rate it?

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Is a 1115 a 1115 regardless of who makes it
« on: December 10, 2020, 07:05:37 PM »
Maybe an odd question but call me cautious when it comes to ordering Chinese stuff so... I have a Laidong 1115 and am planning to buy spare parts via Ali-Express. I am assuming a 1115 head gasket, rings etc are all the same regardless of manufacturer... am I assuming correct?

Thanks

Generators / Need some input on buying a Stamford Generator Head
« on: December 05, 2020, 10:29:51 PM »
Hey guys, I have a Kubota D905 engine that I plan to run at 1800 rpm and would like to direct drive a "good" generator head. I'm looking at this Stamford (now Cummings) 8.2 Kw head.
Any Pros/cons with this set up? I actually have 3 ST heads I bought about 10 years ago but I'm thinking this head is way better? Any input appreciated

Bio-diesel Fuel / Expain to me why you bother to make bio diesel
« on: August 18, 2017, 11:07:38 AM »
I'm just curious but why go through all the effort to take veggie oil and convert it to bio diesel? Why not just take veggie oil and add a small amount of gasoline so the specific gravity is that of diesel? What am I missing?

Generators / Glyptal vs. Generic?
« on: August 07, 2017, 01:23:52 PM »
Getting ready to tear my ST gen head apart. Any recommendations as to using a generic "Red Insulating Varnish" as opposed to the real deal-Glyptal?

Hey Guys, I have a Perkins 402D engine that drives a 7.7kw ST head. It is mounted on a 2x2 steel frame. I've gone through 2 iterations of different mounts and neither has reduced the vibration. At first I tried something like this:http://karman.com/ks-series-304-stainless-steel-cylindrical-isolators

As I tightened the belt for the 2 pulleys these things just made a 90 bend! It was then that I realized I forgotten about shear so I then went to the Karmen Rubber page and calculated the correct (or so I thought) isolation pad. These did nothing

I know this is not rocket science so if anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it. I'll post some pics later... after I figure out how.

Thanks

Everything else / Oil tank advice needed
« on: November 04, 2012, 12:23:32 PM »
Hey guys, I'm s..l..o..w..l..y getting my diesel back up system together. Currently I have a multi fuel furnace that will burn oil or wood so I have a 275 gallon oil tank in my basement. I just bought another and have it mounted outside. My plan is to have 3 tanks. This will give me a large supply of fuel at any given time plus I get a discount when I order more than 300 gallons of oil at a time. My 2 extra tanks will be outside, uncovered. I am somewhat concerned about getting water condensation in them and I know IPs do not like water. Do I have to worry about condensation in my tanks that I will use in my diesel or am I just being anal? I have a Diesel Craft Centrifuge but so not see that was a practical solution.

Hey guys, A few years ago I bought a Listeroid 6/1 and a Redstone from John F. (Woodnstuff). I welded some frames for them and packed them away in my garage. My plan at the time was to store them for 10 years, retire, then build my retirement home in southern Virginia and use these 2 as back up power etc for an off grid house. I also bought a few extra heads for the 6/1 as well as the "complete" spare parts package from Central Maine Diesel. Well... Now I'm seriously thinking of buying 2 of the 20 hp Laidong engines from John F and selling the 2 previously mentioned engines. I like the idea of having 2 of the same engines, side by side as my power source ( commonality of parts etc).

What do you all think? Are they worth selling? If so.. how much would be reasonable? I have no intention of making a profit, just selling them for fair market value or a little less.

Any thoughts/comments appreciated.

Generators / Help me pick a replacement bearing for my ST Head
« on: December 15, 2009, 05:12:22 PM »
Hey guys, I'm going to be buying some replacement bearings to keep as spares for the various ST heads I have. What do you all like or dislike? As far as RS- (rubber) or ZZ- (metal) I'm leaning towards the metal sealed bearing as oppossed to the rubber sealed bearing. Any pros or cons?

Also.. Anyone like a particular manufacturer? I'm not sure if that matters since all bearings are probably made in China

Thanks, Randy B

Other Slow Speed Diesels / How to mount the Cat Diesel?
« on: September 03, 2009, 05:35:26 PM »
Anyone given much thought as to how they are going to mount their Cat diesel?. I'm thinking of making a base out of 2x2 box metal to fit the engine, generator, battery etc. I just haven't decided on how to mount the engine to mitigate vibration. Any thoughts?.....  Randy B
