That's why they recommend removing the NEGATIVE cable first from the battery before such operations. Now, ask me if I always follow such precautions! ;-(    (hint; no I don't)
Had a friend whose watch welded itself between the pos post and the shock tower - burned him right to the bone in a second! Not pretty at all!

I melted a 3/4" ring spanner one day on a 24V starter motor - was undoing the battery terminal and it swung around and touched the block - a small spark that welded it to the block, a yelp from me, and it began to glow. And glow and glow and glow, as two 12V b :oatteries with an available cranking current of about 1300amps discharged fairly quickly. By the time I figured out it was the battery isolator stuck on and had wopped it with a convenient sledgehammer that was nearby, all the battery wiring was a bit on the hot and slightly-melted side.

My spanner was banana-shaped after that.... which was actually pretty convenient at times.

Lister Based Generators / Run Resistive heaters from Truck alternator(s)?
« on: December 24, 2006, 12:51:42 PM »
Hi
I posted this under a thread about cogen, which was a little dumb, so I thought maybe if I put it in a better place, some electron cowboys might comment. I am trying to find time to sit down and figure this out while trying to remember what I learned in Tech school 10 yrs ago.

I had a wacky idea, see what you think. If and when I get my old Petter AV2  running, I need a load for it. Our electricity is very reliable here and not prohibitively priced. So, a ST head is probably out. In the event of an outage I can run my oil fired boiler for heat with a small inverter and a car battery. My 220V well pump is the only other thing I couldn't do without for a few days....

But, anyway, I think I could lay my hands on some old truck alternators and am thinking that using them to power a resistive load, say some electric baseboard heaters, or better yet an old electric DHW heater preheating return water to my oil fired boiler. I like the idea of indirectly/directly cogenning using the old gas heater too- great idea! Any idea if I need any complicated control system? Do you think I should run DC to the elements or one phase of the AC from the windings to each (this means 3 elements or 2 heaters I guess) Any idea how the 220V elements would perform with this lower voltage? Someone must have a clue if this is completely crazy.  ;-)

Excellent!  It's 3 I'm trying to get out - guess I have to wiggle 16 some more! Did you just add that page? I don't think I seen it before.

Thanks!

Thanks Peter, for this and all the info you've posted on these engines. It is a series 2, from the angled injectors and the Bryce pump # per your charts. I have the gear and "element" or piston out. It's the cylinder I can't get out. There doesn't seem to be any scoring or scratches on either. There is a pic of the mashed tooth on the gear on the link above, but I don't think it will be a big problem.
ps that was me who emailed you about putting the PH2 manuals online a couple of weeks ago.

Petteroids / Help with AV2 inj pump
« on: November 25, 2006, 03:13:12 AM »
Hi all
I just picked up a little (650#?) AV2 and am trying to get it running. I thought it was a PH2 from Peters manuals because of the rad, but from the #'s on the bryce pumps have deduced it is an AV2. I have pretty good compression but one pump was stuck although I can't see why now that I have it (mostly) apart. I can't figure out how to get the pumping cylinder out of it. I seen Peter's breakdown pics not for this particular pump but can't get this last bit out. The other pump is nice and free so I think I may just flush some clean diesel through it rather than dismantle it. Also, one tooth on the gear is a little mashed, possibly from my thumping (gently ) on the rack. I think I can file it a bit. I worked as a hydraulic tech for a bit in Halifax (NS Canada, loved the job, hated the city) so I think I understand the cleanliness req. Any thoughts? I put some pics at:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/31981317@N00/
Also, the manual I got with it is  for an AVA2 and describes dire consequences if I don't use the finned aluminum sleeve rather than a copper washer to seal under the injector. I don't have such sleeves nor room for them but I don't think it applies to the water cooled one anyways. Anyone have a manual or experience to confirm?

what kind of drug was popular when whitworth sizes were invented anyways??  ;-)
