Listeroid Engines / Re: Anyone add a glow plug to their 6/1 ?
« on: August 24, 2009, 10:02:49 PM »
We had a 12/1 "thumper" and a 24/2 unit set up with the glowplugs out in our yard this past winter. Morning temps were -10 and we left the engines outside for a couple of hours to get "acclimated" to the cold. After applying the glowplugs to both units for about 20 seconds, both fired with relative ease and we were impressed with the results. We tried the plugs, again on a couple more occasions and are satisifed that if they engines will start in the middle of a Maine winter, they will start anywhere. Give 'em a try; I am sure you will be pleased.....Thanks, Phil from Central Maine Diesel

Listeroid Engines / Re: What does a Listeroid 6/1 head weigh?
« on: June 16, 2009, 02:10:26 PM »
And the answer is.......46 pounds, all wrapped up and ready to go! Size is 7 x 7 x 9 and would fit under the seat. Give us a call and let me know what day you plan to stop in. I can give you directions and would be more than happy to show you around. Save the lobster bib after your seafood dinner, ' cause you might need it when you start drooling over some of our production generators (Listeroid and non-Listeroid alike). I think you will be impressed with our new seed press/generator setup with the 12/1 engine we are putting together for this years fairs......Phil from Central Maine Diesel

Listeroid Engines / Re: Got my new engine!
« on: May 12, 2009, 02:39:04 PM »
Now from CMD....We think it's great that everyone enjoys the Lister-type engines as much as we all do. We also would like to have Mike share with everyone his pictures and comments. I know Atul is interested as well. He just paid us a visit last Friday and one of the prevailing topics of that day was continued improvement and engine quality. We pointed out some changes that we feel would make for a better engine. It is also the customer feedback that goes even farther to making a premium engine. So long as people don't get "nasty" and can keep the comments constructive, we will all learn from this. I know Atul is very much concerned with making the best engines possible. They have come a long ways from where they were. He knows that the US market has high expectations. He took numerous pictures of our new projects and prototypes and listened and worked with our techs on design issues. Mike sent me a detailed list of observations he made during his teardown. I found these of great interest and forwarded these to Atul. These are the type of comments that will benefit us all. We are in this for the long haul and are not going anywhere. We have thirty new engines on order and these will incorporate some of the changes that were discussed with Atul. We also have another major parts order in the works with many additional items not in stock.....So lets see some pictures, Mike and please share with us your comments.....Thanks, Phil from CMD

Listeroid Engines / Re: 12/1 Electric Starts are Back!!
« on: April 30, 2009, 08:29:11 PM »
Hi Steve...I love the look of fear in the operators eyes as he stood back and wasn't sure what to do next! We see that from time to time from visitors here at our shop when we start one up out in the yard. The engine always eliicits a smile, but shear terror when we offer them the opprtunity to start one up themselves! For those of us who owned old Harley or English made motorcycles and remember getting thrown over the handlebars or nasty bruises on the inside of our leg, the thought of the hand crank slapping you a multitude of times as it pounds you into the concrete is enough to cause panic. Even though this doesn't happen, the thought is always there. Gotta love these "one lungers".

Hi Steve.....We haven't produced a video or anything yet; we are in the middle of a busy production period with our industrial grade generators. You can view the video that Anand produced by either going to the ListerMarket place and scrolling to page 2 and checking out the topic for Powerline Single with Vibration Mounts or clicking on to this link  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqxvqwMDQPA  Our frame is similar in construction and the vibration mounts are the same ones used in the video. Net result is a quaker and shaker becomes a docile power stroking giant that runs smoothly as shown. We are impressed with the results after butting our heads against the walls trying to find a solution. With the help of Atul and Anand, we learned a valuable engineering lesson and have a skid base and anti-vibration system that we are proud to offer on our new builds.....Thanks, Phil from CMD

Listeroid Engines / 12/1 Electric Starts are Back!!
« on: April 29, 2009, 05:43:08 PM »
After removing the 12/1 electric start units from our sales list, we are pleased to make mention that we have reintroduced the engines for resale. When we received in the engines, we were displeased with the excessive vibration and refused to sell the units until we could find out what was wrong. We had sold two of our generator sets to customers who called us to complain of the problem. We ended up bringing those units back in and exchanging them for hand crank models. We worked tirelessly with Atul at Anand to solve the problem. He continued to make note of the fact that these engines were tested at their facility and did not have the vibration problems we spoke of. We re-designed our skid base and added the "cushy foot" vibration mounts that Atul recommended. What we found was two-fold. First...prior to our modifying our skid base, the engines would shake and "walk" their way across our parking lot. There was way too much flex for this powerful engine in the skid base we had been using in all of our builds. We made some changes and beefed things up where needed and now have a new skid base design that helps absorb some of the shock from this big stroker.Second, with the addition of the "cushy foot" vibration mounts, this is one of the smoothest and most impressive builds yet. While the engine has not been modified, the skid base changes we made has "quieted down" most of the vibration and the vibration mounts makes this a most pleasant unit. We have decided to continue to offer this unit as part of our product line, but will recommend (and supply the plans, if you want to build your own) the skid base design our techs came up with as well as encourage the use of rubber vibration isolators. We feel the 12/1 electric start is an impressive unit and has much to offer for various uses. Our thanks goes to Atul and his patient and understanding engineers/technicians for their help and support through all of this.....Thanks! Phil form Central Maine Diesel

Listeroid Engines / Re: How to remove the inside portion of the COV ?
« on: April 29, 2009, 05:30:57 PM »
Jens....This is very true. While we all know the tolerances of most of the machined parts on the Listeroids aren't exactly precision made, for whatever reason the COV threads are the exception. We have found that the heat and deposits quickly "weld" everything in place. Wish I could shed some light on an easier way for removal. If all else fails and the sledgehammer helps you to vent your frustrations, I do have the extra heads, blocks, gaskets and anything else you need in stock. I know once you get the glow plugs installed and use them for the first time (they even facilitate warm weather starts when used for 10-15 seconds), you will say "Sweeeeet!"....Thanks, Phil from CMD

General Discussion / Re: We missed you Lister engine Forum.
« on: April 23, 2009, 08:32:27 PM »
Not having access to the Lister Engine Forum was a loss over here. I have learned so much from you guys and I appreciate you sharing all your years of knowledge. I was surprised at how many people e-mailed or called me to find out what happened to the Forum! Glad it's back and to whomever is responsible for keeping it up and running, we are all most grateful. Thanks, Phil from Central Maine Diesel

Listeroid Engines / Re: Finally ordered my engine!
« on: April 15, 2009, 04:20:03 PM »
If only his wife would be as excited as he's going to be when it arrives. Make her day and give her the hand crank and tell her "Honey, this is for you, now let me show you how to start it!" I'm sure she will tell you where it belongs! A happy marriage is based on doing things together. Make sure she knows how to use your new gib key puller and make her a hanging set of flywheel keys to dangle from her rear view mirror in her car to show your enduring love for her. Love is a beautiful thing and sharing your new "toy" with her can be a bonding experiance! Just be prepared to duck when the hand crank comes sailing your way through the air!!!

We just finished up crating Mikes new engine. Had it running out in the yard yesterday for about fifteen minutes (per his request) making sure everything was tight-right and ready to go. All you have to do is add some diesel, Mike and you're good to go! It sure was pretty sitting out there on a rare sunny Maine morning; chugging away happily awaiting its new owner. I think you will be impressed! I have your extra parts boxed up and your new Lister-type engine should be leaving here this afternoon. You will be the envy of the neighborhood! Happy motoring and thank you!!.....Phil from CMD

Listeroid Engines / Re: Spares, or no spares? That is the question!
« on: April 13, 2009, 03:21:14 PM »
Now from Central Maine Diesel.....We have been selling the Anand engines for just over a year and a half. In that time, we have sold 150+ engines and have 30 more in the works for delivery in August. With all of the engines we have sold and with all of the spare parts kits we have sold (about 20 or so), my take is that the spare parts kit is not a neccessity. I have only had to warranty 2 injectors and one fuel line since we have been selling these engines. It is my belief that the injectors were just clogged from particulates and could have been easily cleaned, but we stand behind what we sell and I send out the needed parts upon request. My most common parts leaving here for purchase are gasket sets, idler gears, connecting rod bearings, piston rings, tappet sets, rocker arms and filters. I have sold other parts, but these appear to be the most commonly requested. While there would be a savings in having a complete kit sent out with a new engine (UPS costs "about" $110 for the complete kit, depending on zip code), since the added weight doesn't bump up the price in freight charges too much via common carrier, the added cost of having your money tied up in spare parts that may not be used or not needed for years, to me, is not really worth it when purchasing a new engine. I supply a full parts replacement warranty for one year (and then some), so you would be covered the entire year you own and use your engine. The ones who benefit the most from the spare parts kit are the folks who are doing a rebuild or have major needs. We are in this for the long haul. We work closely with Atul at Anand. They understand the "high expectations" of the US marketplace and that quality engines and parts are what is going to keep them in business. We will not sell a product that we wouldn't own ourselves. This is why we are not selling the 12/1 electric start models (we are sitting on nine of these) until the vibration issue is resolved. If we see that the time will come when parts and engines are no longer going to be available, then we will put out the word and advise. Until then, we will continue to stock a growing and complete parts inventory for our engines. Let me know your needs, and we will do our best to get the parts you need ordered in....Thanks, Phil from CMD

Listeroid Engines / Re: EPA rules on importing a listeroid
« on: March 11, 2009, 03:19:55 PM »
So John......Please elaborate as to what (and who) your sources are regarding the importation of the Lister-type engines. Ours are coming in with no problems or issues and we have not heard anything to the contrary. Our units come in and are sold "for bio-diesel use only" and "for stationary use only". This flies just fine with the customs people. We all hear rumors and many of those rumors are laid bare across these pages. Point us in the direction of fact because I heard from someone who heard from someone that read somewhere that......rumors are rumors, facts are facts...Thanks

Listeroid Engines / Re: New here
« on: March 05, 2009, 02:22:16 PM »
Hi Jake.....I have a customer who is using a water pump similar to the one you show. He mounted his Lister-type engine onto an old wagon, uses a large capacity fuel tank and hauls his wagon out to his "back forty" where he has a small pond. He drops in his hose, starts up his engine and the water flows and flows all day. I do not know how much pressure is provided or how he utilizes the water, but he was adamant about the fact that his Lister provided all the power he needed to get the job done. I have other customers who have purchased engines from us set up for power generation. One gentleman cools his engine by running the piping under his wood working shop to provide radiant heat for his floor and cooling his engine at the same time. His electrical power is produced by the generator end we set him up with. Another customer is using a coolant drum on his generator set and has run piping in the drum to provide supplemental heat to his solar hot water system. There are quite a few clever people that visit this Forum and we have learned a great deal from many of them. We will be setting up one of our new engines with a seed press on one end and a generator on the other end. We are also setting the engine up to burn vegetable oil. Our goal is to demonstrate the ability to produce ones own fuel for those who strive for energy independance. Here in Maine, many farms have gone back to woodland. The fields that once produced crop have now become overgrown and unworkable. Perhaps, with everyone eyeing alternative fuel sources, there will be a time when cropland can be cultivated once again to produce energy fuels to power the Lister type engines for electrical (and other) uses. While this may not be a viable alternative for the mass majority, it would be a step in the right direction to help ween this Country off foreign oils. The Lister-type engines have multiple uses. I have sold two that are being used to power oil derricks in Utah. Another sold to a small company in Idaho who uses it for crushing rock. I have also heard the Amish use these engines to power their belt driven lathes and such. I am sure you will learn other uses from the other visitors to this site. Take a look at our site at www.generatorsales.com  to view some of the engines and generator sets we sell. Perhaps you can get an idea on uses from some of the models we offer. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you and feel to contact me at any time if you have any questions (though, most of the guys on this site are far more knowledgeable then we are!!)....Thanks, Phil from Central Maine Diesel

Listeroid Engines / Re: EPA rules on importing a listeroid

Hi Mike.....We frequently get asked about the EPA rules and how we can still import engines into the Country. I don't know where this myth got started (we ought to have Jaime and Adam at Mythbusters look into this!). We think it came from someone who was sitting on some engines and needed some quick cash and wanted to unload them real fast (that's one explanation we have heard). Truth be told, we have imported over 160 engines in the last year (all from Anand). They are shipped in and designated "for stationary use only" and marked "bio-diesel". We have had no problems, no issues and will be placing another order in a couple of months. We researched the ordering before we placed an order as we were burnt awhile back by trying to bring in a shipment of Chinese diesel generators that didn't pass the muster. They were confiscated and...as they say "Once burned, twice shy". We have all the confidence in the world (as it now exists) that we will continue to be able to import these engines and are working with Anand to insure that whatever needs to be done to keep these "allowable" can be done or considered. You shouldn't have problems bringing in your own, but be aware of all the costs. We have to pay for fumigation, x-rays, brokerage fees, container costs, shipping costs, freigh costs from New York Harbor, etc. It adds up pretty quickly!...Hope this helps....Thanks, Phil

Listeroid Engines / Re: Slobbering=not enough temp or not enough load?
« on: February 18, 2009, 08:00:16 PM »
Just as an FYI.....I have not received any e-mails from anyone requesting information on our electric start models or otherwise. As many of you here on the Lister Forum know, I DO answer each and everyone of the e-mails, phone calls or letters we receive about any and all of our prodcuts. We are a small company dedicated to not only customer service, but back all of our products up with a warranty. The Lister-type engines we sell from Anand carry a full one year parts replacement warranty and I am usually quite liberal with that timeframe as well. Buy something from us, you get product backing and technical support. We don't know it all and we do pay close attention to what you folks have to say because this is where we have gathered much of our knowledge. Please send all your e-mail inquiries directly to me and I will make sure you get you answer. My address is philpepin@infionline.net  We do stock the 6/1, 12/1 and 24/2 electric start models. You cannot retrofit the starter kit on older models the way Anand has produced the kit (I take that back...many of you out there are extremely clever and most adaptive!!). I am just thinking of the "newbie" who wants to convert his current engine to electric start. The flywheel has a cogged adapter gear that is used to turn the flywheel when the electric start is activated. This cannot be used on current models as an "add on" feature (unlike something like our glow plug, which is easily added on). We are always here to help and just a phone call or e-mail away. Please direct all requests for information directly to me and I apologise, for whatever reason, we may have missed your e-mails....Thanks, Phil at Central Maine Diesel
