No not concrete just heavy wooden bearers.

BTW I only did this for few minutes just to show folks how it rotates, after that it was staked down to the ground with big marquee stakes to keep it still as shown in the picture here

I think Chug has "mysterious Lister powers". Note in his pictures how the engine somehow spins in the back of his truck all by itself !!! If that was the case why didnt he just will the engine off and do away with all those chains and things LOL !

To see these mysterious lister powers in action have a look at this video here

It's down the page a bit here

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Removing injector English 6/1

Looking at the David Edgington Lister CS Story it shows a 1940's illustration of the seperation of the injector from the water jacket, so I guess the change to non water jacketed injector was in the early 1940's, and if it's a 1957 6/1 it won't be the 'wet type' injector as my 1953 6/1 doesn't have it.

Thanks Peter

I thought it might be something like that, and I saw your post on the SE forum with some great pics from the Nuenen rally.

Question about Pump no. for Peter, or indeed anyone else who knows the answer.

the pump no is listed as CAV BPF1B 70 CS 6253
here
http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/ListerData/cstech.htm

But mine is CAV BPF1B 70 BS 6253
identical except for a B instead of an S
is this a typing error on your page Peter or is there another reason for this difference?

Tom

as long as you keep things clean then removing the injector is a five minute job, involving a few nuts to remove the tinwork and then two nuts and fuel pipe connectors.

I have removed my injector and reused my gasket lots of times but it's easy to make one from gasket paper if you do tear it, then you can inspect the injector nozzle to see if it looks blocked you can always refit the injector to the piework whilst out of the head and see if it sprays when cranking (make sure you point the spray direction away from you).

Flywheels are such large lumps of iron that heat is quickly dispersed and you don't need to get red hot, we're not talking oxy/acetylene cutting heat here just raising the temp a few °C with a handheld propane/butane gun should help.

If it doesn't pull off easily with a puller then I agree with Steve, get some heat and plenty of penetrating oil on it.

I lifted Old Bess up an inch on some old box section and then tied her down tight with
a ratchet strap then fired her up and had her running in anger today, absolutely wicked!
But blast it all I've got a drip from the fuel tap! ;)

I've spent most of my hometime this week cleaning the fuel system and priming it, checking the oil pump, checking everything else that should move does and oiling or greasing it, and anything that shouldn't move was secure. I was already for a test flight but I still had no starting handle.

Then I got an email saying someone had a handle I could have, so a very big thank you to Mark Walker (Volvox Engineering) for sorting out a starting handle for me.
After getting back from work at 3-30 this afternoon I jumped straight in the vegmobile and thrashed over to Mark's house for the handle.
I thought I'd better not get too involved when I got back home as I hadn't really seen the family much this w/end, so I promised them I would just spend ten minutes in the garage, well I only needed five of my ten!
After doing all the pre flight checks I gave 'Old Bess' as I've named my CS, five or six turns and then moved the valve lifter/decompressor and she fired up straight away....Yee ha, I shut her down after a few seconds as the flywheels are quite close to the floor and she had a little wobble and I didn't want them to touch the floor and send her flying.
So I've got to get her stable then I can run her properly, oh and the frost damage before any lengthy running!

I have been looking at that info and I was confused because it has 6 digits on the engine ID plate and engines up until 1951 manufacture had a 5 digit number according to what is shown on Peter's website here

http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/EngineDating/Dating.htm

Post 1951 have a completely different engine ID plate style here

http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/EngineDating/Dating5.htm

I have been told to check the foundry casting mark on the crankcase opposite the injection pump and just above the crankshaft bearing housing which is 9-A-53 which confirms Peter's dating of 1953

I'd like to know how you did it please Peter just from those pictures I posted?

Peter

I have been trying to find out the year, you say 1953, I guess from the engine number?
do you know anywhere I can look this up?

Hi fellow crankies

I am now the proud owner of a CS 6/1 it is all there and should run according to the bloke I got it from but it needs a little tinkering and the block needs welding up because of the usual frost damage first.

this afternoon it took me two hours just to get it off my truck and into my garage!

I will sort some pictures out soon.
