Lister Based Generators / Re: SL3 6.5KVA 1961
« on: January 13, 2018, 06:19:21 AM »
Where I can`t say for sure that an SL engine will run on WVO,   LDs,SRs,STs and Petter PAZ 1 s run fine on WVO.    The only limitation found is the ability of the fuel filter to allow sufficient flow to the IP.
Discarding the usual paper fuel filter element and fitting a cheapo plastic mesh type inline fuel filter seems to resolve flow issues.

15-C ambient and above seems fine on straight filtered WVO,  cooler ambient temps sometimes require a proportion of diesel/kero/gasoline adding to the WVO to enable reliable (hand) starting,  the percentage varies from engine to engine,  one that is a poor starter on diesel fuel will be very difficult with WVO at cooler temps.

As everyone knows, filtration of the WVO prior to use is of major importance especially when using the inline plastic mesh filters,  mine is filtered through a 1 micron  air filter sock.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Lister CS fuel tank
« on: December 02, 2017, 06:56:43 AM »
Ade,

They were chain driven and rad cooled,  the first CS I owned was an ex Liner mixer engine and I was told the history of it by the elderly owner who had scrapped the mixer.
Quite a machine,30s 40s 50s era and from (faulty) memory they had an approx 1/2 cubic yard mixer drum which was loaded by a hopper, this was filled by hand then raised up to tip into the mixer drum using a wire rope  system.  Graces guide has a line drawing of one.   I`ve seen one where a winch pulled a small manually guided dragline scoop through a pile of aggregate in order to fill the hopper.      Also there are  large hydraulically powered versions of this system with a dragline boom and operators cabin.

Ade,       you may well be wrong about the fuel tanks not being fitted to CS engines,  the rad cooled ones installed in the Liner self loading concrete mixers definately did,   the fuel tank was mounted on an extension of the rad mounting brackets.    It might sound crazy but LT1 engines fitted in a small concrete mixer will run for a week on a tankful of fuel.

Hi Amsimoes,

Your`e doing the right thing,   using the greedy Ebay   (in the UK they operate from a tax haven)  platform as an advertising medium,   with this method you should filter out the many bidding idiots out there to whom buying and not completing is a sport.

I`ve given up replying to the opinionated people who wish to remind me that there`s one in Kazakistan, Nigeria, next door et al,  cheaper than the item I`m selling,   the reason they don`t take their money and unasked for opinion where its needed, is because talk is cheap.

That`s my little self opinionated rant over and good luck with the sale.

Lister Based Generators / Re: My experience

Posting links is beyond me but if you google "Induction Motors As Generators"  a scan of that book by N. Smith comes up, although this book is about micro hydro schemes in which dumping electrical load is not an efficiency problem, the mark-space load controller described in the book could work on an engine driven IMAG so long as the ballast load was used for heating, as suggested by others.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   A financially humbling experience with my mk1  induction motor generator, was frying a £435.00 circuit board on a packing machine due to overvoltage, a salutory lesson  about having some basic instrumentation when tinkering with electricity.

Bolt the engine and generator to a wood or steel frame then bolt the frame to a suitable scrap tyre,   I`ve bolted a 6-1 to a piece of plywood and sat it loosley on a  750 X 16"  tyre  and run it throughout it`s speed range without it hopping across the floor at all  although it did a jive on the tyre when acelerating.  Look on Utube,  "Dancing Lister CS"

Engines / Re: Magical Honda Engine
« on: February 19, 2017, 05:10:14 PM »
Having been given a large quantity of petrol/diesel mix, as a consequence of people missfuelling diesel vehicles with petrol, I decided to use it in this type of disposable generator  for my low power single phase requirements at work.  After trialling the contents of different 25 litre drums in a GX340 engine I sorted the drums into usable/ needs  petrol adding categories.  the GX160 clone engines start and run fine on both types of fuel but the fuel with a greater proportion of diesel  causes detonation at higher loads,  the unburnt diesel finds its way into the sump.    My thoughts are that if they`ll stand this sort of abuse they can`t be all that bad.   Unfortunately I`ve no sidevalve engined genset presently for I believe one of those would run without issues on this fuel.
Glort, I`ve also tried running diesel engined gensets with petrol mixed in with the fuel and not been impressed with the results,  ie less power.

These generators are 3 KVA output,   fitted with a Honda GX 160 clone engine and they work very well for the money, about £150-160 brand new and delivered, the pullcord assy and capacitor commonly fail and one brand new one had the wrong main jet fitted.   Some unscrupulous sellers apply Honda badges and wrongly claim the engines rated HP as the KVA output.    Compared to a genuine Honda they are quite poor, the bad quality of the engine alloy, weak threads  and the monkey metal carburettor stand out when working on them.   We regularly have some of your fellow countrymen calling and selling these and other tools  out of the back of vans Jondoh.

Hi,     I bought a batch of Chinese loop powered LCD,  hours run, volts and frequency meters off Alliexpress and have fitted manyof them on generators, some with with the worst case vibration and blown rain conditions and not had one fail yet!!  They are a very useful setting up and monitoring  device.   I made a generator output test box some time ago, using a cheapo digital 50 amp volts/current meter and a cheapo  digital frequency meter, both loop powered.      After one particular overvoltage event,  one of the volts/ current meters started to read 100 Volts above actual and I`ve lost count of the frequency meters that have gone pop due to overvoltage conditions  (above300V)  when testing small single phase generators,    they each cost less  than a  beer in the UK,  so not too many tears shed if they fry.

Hi Stef,
The photo makes all the difference, it`s now as clear as mud !!     220 V line to line voltage not 415 V as per my assumption.

Generators / Re: Alternator test
« on: January 01, 2017, 08:35:12 PM »
Hi Stef,

Is the 100V 50Hz @ 620 RPM in your first sentence a typo?                                                                                                                                                                            In my limited experience an  ideal unloaded voltage would be 237 and depending on the alternator and AVRs repspnse to load, this would probably drop 10 volts or so on full load with the engine speed remaining fairly constant after the initial dip caused by applying the load.     If the AVR is a modern type it will probably have UFRO function  (under frequency roll off ) ,  this reduces the excitation voltage proportionally, below  a preset frequency which then reduces the alternator  output voltage which reduces the load which in turn allows the engine to regain speed, in theory of course.
If the   AVR is an older type without UFRO then certain underspeed conditions can lead to the magic smoke, however if as is common  either type of AVR is powered by the main stator output then gross overload/underspeed  will cause a collapse of the output anyway.
Your 8 KVA 3 phase alternator should be good for 2.5 Kw 1 phase to neutral, this is the nominal output of a 6-1  Start-O-matic set.

Hope this helps,
Mark.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Need Lister CE head gasket
« on: December 23, 2016, 04:31:08 AM »
Doing a bit of research brought me to this old topic and here`s my two pennorth.     I have a CD engine fitted with the screw in/out COV, the engine has no facility on the block for fitment of the usual lever which operates the COV so I would assume this was a production variant or the screw in/out COV is a replacement for a solenoid operated COV.
The halfway (decompressed) position on the usual COV fitted to CD CE engines in my experience makes for difficult hand starting, due to the restriction of the COV valve and as JP2  says,  its not a problem cranking on full compression ( you need to start this cranking at TDC firing stroke)  as the flywheel mass helps the first bump and subsequent bumps over compression.

Fairly easy job for any half decent welder to let in a suitable piece of mild steel and bronze weld it in place.
