Anyone have a spare xyzer offset idler bolt they could part with? Thanks

Bio-diesel Fuel / Biodiesel Newbie
« on: June 06, 2009, 03:53:18 PM »
I decided to try making biodiesel using the DrPepper method on both new and used oil. Both batches turned out good I guess. Should this stuff smell kind of like Dial soap or does that mean I need to wash it more?

Listeroid Engines / Valve guide lubrication
« on: April 25, 2009, 04:37:45 PM »
I noticed that the oil in my 6/1 valve guide wells only lasts a few hours running, even oil blended with Lucas(very thick and tacky). Is this normal? There is some valve stem play but I haven't measured how much.

Other Fuels / Animal fat
« on: March 27, 2009, 11:23:37 AM »
The other day after frying up some bacon, which I try to stay away from, I wound up with 10 oz. of fat that I filtered through some cloth and coffee filters while it was hot. before it started to congeal I mix some rug with it but turned solid within an hour in the cold. Anyone try burning animal fat in their diesel? Its obvious you would need heat with this stuff.

Listeroid Engines / Muffler
« on: February 22, 2009, 12:22:12 AM »
I've been using a 30lb freon tank in my exhaust system because it was light and smaller than a propane tank. The problem is that it rings with each exhaust pulse, its quite loud and tinny sounding under load. The other day I tried a (straight through design) muffler or resonator and was amazed at how quiet it made the exhaust, I was just holding it up to the exhaust flange and it was quieter than my regular exhaust exiting out the back of the garage. I think it may be glass packed though. Is this a problem for a diesel? Do the propane tanks do the same but maybe not as bad because the metal is thicker? BTW my exhaust is vertical. Thanks

Engines / Cold Starting
« on: February 09, 2009, 03:01:12 AM »
I may never try starting my engine below freezing again without the aid of a propane torch. I thought I was going to need a starter or glow plug but found that laying a lit propane torch across my exhaust elbow so that the flame is pulled in on the intake stroke starts it on the first compression stroke. I've confirmed this three times. I tried sticking the torch directly into the intake like mentioned on here but the flame would get sucked out as soon as the decompression lever was thrown. This is as KISS as it gets. YMMV

Waste Vegetable Oil / Heat rope
« on: February 01, 2009, 07:19:07 PM »
Well, my generator project has been pretty much on hold for a month, with temperatures as low as -30°F / -34°C in the last few weeks it became unbearable to work in my shop and too expensive to heat. I putter on it when its warm enough or when I don't mind running the oil fired space heater for hours. In the basement I'm trying to put together my electrical panel that will go on the wall behind my generator and I'm trying to decided on injector line heaters for running  WVO. I'll have to go with 120v/240v rope heaters for now since I don't have a 12v system in place yet. I've checked out McMaster's and other places but I'm unsure what to get. My local hardware store has the stuff to melt ice on the roof, would this get hot enough if it was in short lengths? McMaster's has some really small heating pads that could be placed on the injector without heating the whole line to +200°. I've already run some wvo in the engine blended with diesel or rug but with these temps I think I need some heaters. Thanks.

Generators / Capacitor
« on: December 18, 2008, 06:59:36 AM »
I've seen mentioned a few times about the use of a capacitor on an ST to help with flicker. Is it worth doing? Size? Where does it get wired?

Listeroid Engines / Engine temps from a newbie
« on: December 07, 2008, 07:13:11 PM »
This morning I gave the roid a 20 min low-watt warm up, then put the biggest load on it yet, 2700w, a room heater and an old toaster oven(man, I should have cooked something in it, I'm starved :D)

These are temps after 45 minutes loaded to 2700 watts, ST5  in 120v mode, temps now stable.  No smoke.
Room temp 32f - 0c, Radiator vertical size 34"h x 1.5"thick - 863mm x 38mm, 195f - 90c thermostat, 25% antifreeze, non pressurized, radiator core 75% covered on top both sides.

Fuel: about 15% WMO, ATF and diesel with a splash of Power Service.

F and C may differ a little because I have to change from one to the other and try to reshoot the same spot. :P

Engine outlet  219f - 108c
Top of cylinder head by injector 229f - 112c
Bottom of cylinder by inlet 167f - 75c
Inlet of radiator 200f - 95c
Outlet of radiator 170f - 78c
Exhaust before expansion tank 430f - 224c
Exhaust after expansion tank 295f - 147c (wow!, what a drop)
Oil filter 80f - 27c
Top of ST5 89f - 32c

Pulled radiator covers off at an hour and temps stayed stable for another 20 min(no fan) until engine just stopped all of a sudden.
Doh!! Out of fuel!!

Other observations:
Leaks fluids like an old Harley Davidson, O.K. maybe not that bad, just a couple of small leaks to fix.
ST volt gauge finally quit completely. At least I still have that little light :D. Plan on removing box anyway.
Tried COV in and out, didn't notice change in sound or rpm. Left it screwed in.
Very little diesel knock once warmed up. Sounds great!  8)
I'm happy so far. Now I need to get this thing hooked up to power the house before some big ice storm.

Think I'm going to pull the oil plug today and put in 20w non synthetic till its broke in a lot more. I now have a mix of 30w and 15w40, pretty thick cold.

Generators / ST Hum
« on: November 27, 2008, 12:08:58 AM »
Been putting some hours on the 'roid using various loads, nothing useful yet. I love the sound of the engine. Sometimes I just stand and watch the flywheels go round and the valves tick away  :). But the hum from the ST5 when loaded is almost maddening  >:(. Anyone had to isolate their ST from a metal frame because of humming, or is this a problem I should be looking for? Maybe it can't be stopped, I thought I read here about someone with the same problem but I couldn't find the post.

Listeroid Engines / Thermostat
« on: November 18, 2008, 05:50:55 AM »
I need a thermostat # for my Anand Powerline 6/1. The thermostat goes between two flanges. I thought I found one from my local NAPA that fit but the pipe hits it threading in  >:(.  I tried every thermostat they had on their shelf. Thanks

Waste Vegetable Oil / Washing
« on: November 09, 2008, 02:25:08 PM »
Whats the best way to wash WVO? Is it necessary? Could you do the same to WMO?

Waste Vegetable Oil / Preheating
« on: November 08, 2008, 06:16:54 PM »
Hopefully within a couple of weeks I'll be able to start running my 6/1 on my accumulation of WVO. I already plan to wrap tubing around the exhaust. Is it necessary to heat the oil at the injector? I figure the oil must get hot again just sitting in the injector on a hot cylinder head before its injected. I've seen a bunch of different preheating setups. Whats your experience?
