General Discussion / MEP-802A Are they worth having?
« on: August 15, 2019, 05:47:01 PM »
I have been thinking of buying a MEP-802A to use at my cabin.  Basic needs are for lights, fridge, and a window unit during the hot times.  During hunting season, it might get run for 4-6 days.  My cabin is nowhere close to the grid...thanks to a jerk-ass neighbor who wont grant me a right of way.  Seems these things cost about  $2500.00 and up.  Built to mil-spec, I would think these to be solid units?
Opinions?

General Discussion / Merry Christmas to All here!
« on: December 24, 2017, 10:53:52 PM »
To all those on the site, those who have helped me, and those I dont know.  I want to wish you all, the Merriest of Christmas's and joy to you all.  I lost my Dad in September, and the holidays have been really rough for me.  He was my friend and my mentor, as well as my riding buddy, and my partner in helping me rebuild my SOM. So in His honor, I will try to get back to finishing the engine early this year, with the help of all you wonderful people here at the site.  God Bless...

Original Lister Cs Engines / Proper Trim Colors?
« on: February 21, 2016, 03:43:53 PM »
I am sure this is a stupid question. but..   ???
Looking at pages and pages of photos from across the net, I see that original engines have been trimmed, (letter highlights etc,)
in yellow, gold, black and mostly red.  Other than just personal preference, did Lister trim their engines with a certain color, or is this
all just owner add-ons?  I cant say I have seen any "old" pics with trim color.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Timing Marks on my SOM flywheels
« on: February 16, 2016, 08:47:45 PM »
While cleaning up my flywheels to ready them for paint, I stumbled across 2 timing marks on the non belt wheel.  One is a DC marking, (couldn't find a "t" ),and what appears to be a straight line very lightly marked all the way across, and the other is a lightning bolt.  They aren't very deep, and I would like them to show through after several coats of paint.  So I am thinking of chasing the marks deeper.  Opinions?   Something inside me wants to leave them as found....
Perhaps I am just an old dolt, but I don't recall reading anywhere about timing marks on the Dursley's, seen plenty on the roids?

Original Lister Cs Engines / Wandering vise, Is this a problem?
« on: September 11, 2015, 09:55:03 PM »
While drilling out the taper pins in my cam, the very last hole i drilled, last pass or two?
The vise wandered a little out of position on the old drill press.  This hole is the bottom side of the exhaust
cam.  Will this be a problem?  Do I now need to go with a new shaft?  Gee I feel stupid!  :-[

Having given up on trying to get the enamels to sufficiently harden, I have decided to go with a krylon spray
that seems to be rather close in color.   I have primed the crankcase, (several weeks ago), and hope to soon be assembling my engine.
Looking at others rebuild posts, it seems that some remove all the paint or mask off  areas that will mate, (cylinder to crankcase etc.)

Is this necessary to maintain critical clearances?  Better seal for gaskets?  Once again, I never encountered this while rebuilding motorcycles...
Should I remove the primer? Thoughts, opinions?

Original Lister Cs Engines / Bump clearnace 101 for Dummies/Newbies?
« on: June 30, 2015, 04:47:11 PM »
I have my parts now, and will soon be reassembling the engine.  The Dursley is getting a brand new complete head, cylinder, piston, rings, bushings , gaskets, the whole nine yards.  Only the connecting rod is not being replaced on the top end.  Since it is all new, I am unsure what kind of clearance, gasket thickness etc, I need to set up in the engine.  I have never had to deal with this in my motorcycle rebuilds, so I guess I just need the 101 on Bump Clearance.  ???

Original Lister Cs Engines / Paint Match attempt..Opinions?
« on: June 27, 2015, 02:19:12 AM »
Mixed up a batch of paint the other day to try to match some of the small parts on my SOM, that don't have 50
years of oil on them.  Trying for that elusive mid brunswick green...Opinions?  Too green?

Things I want to Buy / WTB: Crank bearing housing, etc
« on: June 24, 2015, 10:55:35 PM »
Looking for an original bearing housing that will hold a felt seal.  Surely someone has one laying around from a scrapped engine.
Also still looking for the little drive rivets for the serial plates etc.   While I am at it, anyone have a spare 8,5 inch twin v pulley they don't need?

Things I want to Buy / WTB: New Felt Seals,rivets,etc...
« on: June 14, 2015, 03:17:53 AM »
I have ordered a large number of parts from Gary, for my 6/1 rebuild, and he has only 1 of the felt seals available, so if anyone has a new set
laying around, I could use them.  If nothing else, for a spare set for future inventory...  Also, I realized that I need about a dozen of those little brass blind rivets that you reattach the name/serial plates with.  Are the Lister decal sets only available from jolly old England? While I am not building a show engine, I think they would add a nice touch to my project.  Also, if anybody has various used or new spare whitworth nuts, like the ones from the exhaust manifold etc,  just like to have a few extras around.  Let me know...
