Original Lister Cs Engines / 12- 2
« on: June 29, 2016, 07:11:37 PM »
Just located a 12 - 2 number 5831229. 12 hp @ 650 rpm. Waiting for the guy to get back to me regarding a price  :-\. Anyone know how to date these beasts? The chap had it belt driving a crusher plant but retired it when he upsized to a larger plant. He did cover under the rocker covers with grease and remove the pumps and injectors with the intention of overhauling them but as he had no further use for the engine shelved that plan. Hopefully he can relocate them. We did find one pepper pot for the exhaust and the starting handle on a quick scout through the shed and he is sure he has all the bits for it somewhere close by. Even a gasket set as well. We shall see.

Things I want to Buy / Leather seal
« on: March 18, 2016, 06:02:51 PM »
Anyone know if 1. Leather seals are still available to buy or 2, what the hell one uses as an alternative? Got one missing, deteriorated and broken in a Petter M crankcase. Blue

Petteroids / Petter M
« on: February 25, 2016, 03:17:44 PM »
Hello, a friend has given me a Petter M to play with and overhaul. It has been sitting unused for a while so things like rust in the fuel base, stuck fuel foot valve, broken spring on the fuel return plunger but nothing major found yet. It has a lubricator reservoir driven by the rear end of the magneto with a single pipe heading off to the mains (I assume) but there are grease nipples on the casing too  :-\. It is 1.5 bhp @ 750 rpm. What colour should it be ? I see traces of a very pale green. The big end seems to have a might too much play on it. Still has compression although it feels weak but that may be because I am used to my Lister diesel.

Engines / Rocker bushing replacing
« on: September 07, 2015, 04:10:36 PM »
Just a note for those in the UK; I was replacing the rocker bushings on my ST1 and found a two pound coin was the perfect size for pushing them out with a suitable socket to push it and a larger one behind. Worked a treat.  :D

Everything else / Starter motor rotation
« on: November 11, 2014, 04:14:24 PM »
I have a ST1A; does the starter motor also turn anticlockwise? It all depends on which end you are referring to. When looking at the flywheel end the flywheel turns anticlockwise but the starter turns clockwise so is that a clockwise starter motor or is it anticlockwise rotation as seen from the other end?

Engines / ST didn't start
« on: October 05, 2014, 10:37:23 PM »
I returned from a break overseas and thought I had better just check my ST1 stand by generator. Fuel in the tank (engine mounted), oil in the sump (at about the correct level; it is an ST after all !!!) and no debris around the cooling areas (courtesy of anolis lizards). So I gave it a crank only to be greeted by silence, no injector squeak !!!
Question, how can it lose it's prime when there is fuel in the tank ? Only solution I can think of is a leak in the delivery valve / element of the fuel pump. Or the fuel pump stuck in the delivery position.
It started and ran (and bled itself) with the smallest hint of easy start and has been perfect since. Am I missing something here ?

Lister Market Place (things for Sale) / HR parts
« on: April 21, 2014, 08:14:18 PM »
I have to go to the UK in about 3 weeks time and wondered if anyone there is needing used HR parts. I have 2 cylinder heads (complete as they came off), fuel pumps, injectors, push rods, rocker covers etc. Mostly top end stuff. Give me a shout. They came off 2534HR2A23

Engines / Fuel filter bleed screws
« on: January 03, 2014, 06:11:19 PM »
I've about had it with the two bleed screws on the filter unit on my ST 1. Right now I have copper washers on them but they still leak a bit even after tightening with a vice grip. I have a new Lister gasket set for the whole engine but it seems the required washers 662-10450 are not included in that set !!! I have made some from various materials but they always weep a bit; especially when the tank is full. Anyone know what material they should be made from? I can't believe they would be sold separately..... they are tiny ! >:(

Other Slow Speed Diesels / Deutz MAH 914
« on: December 23, 2013, 12:53:42 AM »
Anyone ever had dealings with these great horizontals ? I see a couple showing on you tube but only 2 with an injector change over valve in the high pressure injector line as we had. Being in the tropics we never used those little explosive wicks but started on the side injector and as soon as it was going switched to the top injector. I overhauled it in about 1985 and all the parts were available from Deutz. With the evaporation tank being all around the liner in the bottom the hot water would circulate naturally and it used to gently steam away all day. Our two were connected to winches on the deck of a 1955 built Dutch coaster and ran beautifully.

Engines / Scrapping a HR 2
« on: December 17, 2013, 09:03:21 PM »
Well, I couldn't find a home for the HR 2 attached to a very sad trailer and the guy said it had to go. So I went today with my tools and started taking bits off (it was already in the skip). I got the heads off and saw water had been sitting on top of one piston causing the seized status ! When I got the pipe wrench on the shaft extension and turned one piston moved in the cylinder and the seized one lifted the cylinder with it as expected. I reversed the pipe wrench and brought the cylinder back down hard and sure enough the piston freed up and continued on it's way down. I felt the ridge on the cylinder bore and it really wasn't too bad being as it had been out in the weather for many moons. Anyway it will shortly be on it's way to the scrap yard. The fuel pumps were of Italian make CIPA which I am unfamiliar with and are a bit tight but I have them in a bath of diesel and that will stop it getting any worse. I still have my eye on a HR 3 generator in lovely condition and will keep all the parts I now have as spares. The engine details... No. 2534HR2A23   H.P. 27.5   RPM 2000. A sad day.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Dating a CS
« on: December 10, 2013, 06:55:17 PM »
Have recently discovered a CS 6/1 and have spirited it to greener pastures at the request of the previous owner who did not want it to end up as 'scrap metal in China'. The plate on the side is in good condition and easily readable. No. CS71480   Spec. 5/1/35. HP 6. RPM 650. Any way of finding out when it was made from that info ? It is presently undergoing 'treatment' as the intake manifold had been left uncovered and facing the heavens for MANY years.

Generators / Rewiring Allam generator
« on: November 06, 2013, 02:16:19 PM »
I have recently obtained a Petter AC2 with a 7.5 kva generator giving 415/ 240 vac. It is old so there is no 12 wire system in place. I looked ! I wonder if it would be possible to alter the
excitation current to get 240/ 120 vac. I don't need the three phase side of it at all. I will try and post a picture of the wiring diagram but as I posted stuff on the gallery a week ago which hasn't surfaced, I don't hold out much hope. Basically It has 3 excitation coils energised by a capacitor (or battery flash if it has been a while). Each are connected to one side of a transformers (three in total). This then comes through various diodes, to turn it into DC, and off down to the rotor via a brush. The other brush is connected to ground. On the ac side one side of each coil is joined and grounded. The other comes to the other end of the transformer and then off to the outlet sockets. What are the transformers doing ? Are they a kind of regulator that alters the excitation voltage depending on load? I give up with this picture cra.............!!!

Generators / Genny I.D.?
« on: April 17, 2013, 11:10:25 PM »
I have now completed my overhaul of an ST1, had a new bed built and am just getting ready to get a switch over box and connect up.
I know nothing about the generator. The plate has lost all it's paint but I can still read the numbers that were pressed into it although the
boxes are unlabelled. They appear as below on a rectangular plate rivetted to the genny body.

        58963/2                  1                        Contract number ?        1 phase

         648C                                                 ???

         MCR                      50                         ???                                Hz

          4.5                                                    Kw

       220/110                  1.0                       Voltages                       Rating

         SER                                                  Winding (?)

                                1500                                                           RPM

Can't work out how to post a picture of it (and the kids aren't around)

Engines / ST1 build date
« on: February 12, 2013, 02:23:57 PM »
I have just been given an ST1 # 37 28 ST1A 28-15. I know the first numbers should be the year of build but have no idea as to how to convert them into English!
It had been sitting for years in a shed and the starting handle had been lost. I took the handle from my ST2 welding plant, switched the pawl for the anti clockwise
rotation, wound it round a few times to get some oil through the system and released the decompressor and off it went. Straight up to speed (1500 rpm) and
steady as a rock. Initially there was no current coming out but having cleaned all the brushes and slip rings, reconnected a wire that was adrift and restarted it
perfoms admirably producing either 240 or 120 at the flick of a switch. Don't you just love 'em? I split the generator from the engine to clean and paint it all and saw
a large arrow on the flywheel indicating rotation...... the wrong way !!!! Maybe that is why I got it

Engines / Lister L
« on: June 17, 2012, 06:17:10 PM »
My brother in law has discovered an old unit in a formal garden hidden in a decrepit shed with no roof. Lots of bits missing
but the big cooling tank is there. I think the valve springs have rusted away. I am off to the U K in August (not to the
Olympics) and will see if I can get a peep at it. Do parts still exist for this model ?
