Original Lister Cs Engines / What's the thread on the leak off valve?
« on: April 20, 2006, 08:40:14 PM »
Only just noticed my injector unit hasn't got a leak off valve so the
excess diesel is going to piddle out inside the head casing. :(

Hopefully be easy enough to get some sort of valve down here, just
need to know the thread.

cheers

Original Lister Cs Engines / Noob query, how old is my engine?
« on: April 19, 2006, 10:17:45 PM »
It's only just occured to me i have no idea how old my CS6/1 is, i could age my SR1 with numbers on the engine plate, but i can't find any coherent numbering on the CS for to work from.

Any ideas?

cheers

steve

I've got a potential buyer for my SR1 asking how much it would cost to send the engine over to him.

I don't have a clue!

Anybody? (thinking Hotater might know ;))

Original Lister Cs Engines / Cracked it!
« on: March 18, 2006, 05:41:26 PM »
Or rather, i HAVEN'T cracked it, the engine mounts are still in one piece after a 5 minute run :D

WOOT!

I'm going to start clearing the rubble from the floor and start on some doors next. It's a 'touch' loud.

These 1800rpm engine are mental :D

I don't think sand & cement can handle the "delicate" nature of the power output of Dave. The pillars have had the "hammer & boot" test to be sure they are secure.

This is after a 10 second run .....

Think i'm going to be recementing it and drilling in a few lengths of threadbar. Gah, nearly there :)

Need to consider sorting the exhaust too ...

I know it's here somewhere but i can't find it!

cheers.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Which oil? (uk based)
« on: February 27, 2006, 08:09:46 AM »
I've been reading that i should be looking for non-detergent based oils etc. I have NO idea which oils in the UK are the right thing for my engine.

Anybody know what brands i should be looking for? Could i chuck some plain 5/40 in there for 8 hours to flush out any crap which has been standing since i bought it? (only fired it up long enough to damage myself since i got it home!)

cheers

Well i've finished the wallpadding in the shed to kill a lot of the noise from running the engine, i thought i'd give it a spin (just an excuse to play really, only bolted down to some pieces of 2x4 and no exhaust system fitted).

Oops.

To put it mildly, oops.

In fact i'll spell it out, i'm a total coughing idiot.

You start this engine by cranking a ratcheted handle, it will only pull the engine in one direction, and once the engine picks up speed the driveshaft runs faster than the handle and the ratchet just "freewheels" so you can pull the handle off for safety.

See that last word there? "Safety", i've just learned that it doesn't ALWAYS work that way, sometimes the handle won't slide off the drive shaft.... like i said, oops.

I crank, drop exhaust valve to fire engine, engine fails to start, repeat 10 times. One last time, then i'll sack it until i can put the engine on a few blocks to get it to a more accesable height.

Wish i'd waited. Really wish i'd waited. Really really .....  you get the idea.

Ok, i crank the engine, drop exhuast valve, engine coughs into life, i pull the starting handle off. Sorry, i try to pull of the starting handle, but don't. Either too slow, or it's got a bit of rough rust somewhere along the shaft which is catching.

The handle continues to spin as the engine reaches operating speed. Of one thousand, eight hundred revolutions per minute. And my leg is in the way. My shin to be exact. Oops.

On with the pics, wiefy took most of them after we'd packed my shin with packs of frozen chips and peas. (and she'd stopped laughing at me, i sound quite pathetic when i'm in pain)

Can you spot the slight difference between the legs?

I may be waiting until the engine is bolted to a solid concrete base before i start it again.

We have seen the enemy!

Worked out the problem, the cover for the starter has had a knock at some point and it's too close to the ratchet mechanism, forcing the pin to stay in the slot in the driveshaft. Another excuse to play with the lump hammer :D REVENGE! :D

ok, i had my "mecc alte" alternator arrive yeasterday and it comesw with a blank panel where i was expecting the volt/amp meters and a couple of plugs.

I've taken the panel off and all i've got behind is a few wires,

What else do i need to add to be able to get some 240 out of it!

cheers

steve

edit, need to find a drive adapter to let me attach a pulley wheel too.

Just about to go and pick up an 6.5hp air cooled single from a guy a few hundred miles away (and over here in the uk, that's a considerable distance!), but i'm having trouble tracking down a manual for it, i can find info on the water cooled with trouble, but nobody seems intersted in the air single :(

many thanks

steve
