Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: My CS 6/1 "baby's"

This is my badboy ! ;D
Not a recent video, but you will get the idea.

In Holland we have a lot of small 'tug' boats with a wide range of lister engines like the CS, JP, LD etc.. So it's not very unique here  ;)
I have to update my own toppic soon with new information: http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=2926.0

Good luck with your build!

See youtube for more video's of listers used in a boat

Woa... still alive! Finally got everything running. But the boat/engine still need some tweaks.
Here is the first sneak peek

I think it has lower HP due the fact its air cooled and stationary. But I am not sure about that...

The gaskets seems to work better, altough we still had some whater pooring trough 2 studs. But not as much with the copper gaskets.
Also we applied a littlebit of liquidgasket wich can be used between the cilinder and head. Maby it was not dry yet after an hour.

The problem with the governor is not yet sorted.. all the external parts are now moving just fine.
But it seems that the flyweights are still a bit stuck. Some times the governer does regulate the speed and then it doesnt.. It still not functioning correctly, so we are trying to take the flywheel off and have a look inside the governorhouse upcomming monday.

You can watch the first video's in my channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/creaflip

I just received the package, well wrapped into cardboard and foil + fast delivery and even cheap!
The gaskets look neat, so I hope they work just as well as they look!  :D

This afternoon we will reassemble the engine agian and first put the cooling-part under pressure to see if there are no leaks.
Then hookup the cooling, fire-up the engine and then slowly let it run for a while
So I hope to post some video's soon  ::)

Maby the Indian made headgasket won't fit that perfect on a lister head
However I ordered the modified headgasket from [url=http://www.listergaskets.com
www.listergaskets.com[/url], I will inform you guys if this works better.

Sorry about the reference to sleeve projection; I dont have the luxury of genuine Lister status,  ;) but I do have the option of replacing sleeves. ;D

true true  ;D I had the option to rechrome the cilinders but that is very expensive here in Holland..! around €400,- for each cilinder!  :o
So I had to buy 2 new ones, which fit good and so does the piston.

I already got an reply back from listergaskets.com saying they have received my payment and will send the package tommorow  :)

We then took the engine appart and took a closer look at the the gasket, only the top of the gasket near the stud openings is pooring trough some water.

Can this gasket stop the leakage?  ???  ;)

Did you measure how much the sleeve projects above the cylinder deck? What is this measurement and is it even all the way around?

Too much or uneven and it wont seal the coolant.

It doesnt have a sleeve because its for an orginal Lister  ;) The torque applied on the bolts were also fine, 100 for the large ones and 65 for the smalller ones, as i can recall..
See same issue's here: http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=5109.0 and here: http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=3110.15

Well the lever can move a few milimeters now, my friend has sprayed some wd40 trough the crankcase door into the governor housing and trough the opening of the tappetlever by removing it.
Now its not necessary to remove the flywheel...  :D
He could see that the weights were not stuck and were able move, so that should be oke. We can now run the engine with both fuelpumps enabled and the governor linkage attached.

Ufortunately yesterday we came across another problem  :'( the headgasket (from stationaryengineparts) is leaking. We did a short testrun with cooling but then saw some water bubbles pooring out the stud of the rocker.
My friend then made a system to pressurise the cooling channels with 1 bar (not much) and we can see air comming out on top of the studbolts.
We then took the engine appart and took a closer look at the the gasket, only the top of the gasket near the stud openings is pooring trough some water.

So I was a good test before we placed the engine back into the boat, because I don't want a leaking head!
I have read several toppics now about bad gaskets and most of you seem pleased with the headgasket from: http://www.listergaskets.com/

I'm confused as to who is asking what question here  ??? ?  It seems obvious that the governer cover needs to come off to see why the governer arm is stuck!  This is Tijean's engine and Tijean worked on it and put the governor together?  But Tijean doesn't know what the governor parts look like?  I feel like some posts are missing here???  If it was my engine I would take the cover off and look inside before I turned the crankshaft!  Just the way I do things  ;) !                         Leland

(Laughing)

I just realized how confusing the two names are, Tijmen and Tijean!

Tijmen has the engine with the governor problem. Tijean (me, Frank)  is attempting to arrive at what the problem is and what resources the owner has. That "so called" cover has a fair bit of hardware attached to it and it is important on disassembly and reassembly to note whether the engaging end of the governor linkage is properly in the flanges of the transfer collar. Without knowing the history of the engine it is hard to guess exactly what might be amiss. You dont want to destroy any evidence as you take it apart.

I think the governor housing should come off, but it is not just a case of "take out all the screws and turn it upside down and shake it" till it falls off,  :)

Edit; Check out this thread here   http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=5276.0

I should have linked to it sooner but I thought it was on that other forum, lol.

Thank you for the information, I do have a manual and we already looked at the drawings of the governor system. We also tought that the internal weights must be stuck or something.
This week we will try to remove the flyweel and open the cover to see how we can free the stuck parts. I know it is important to note how it came appart, there so many bits and parts  :D

I have uploaded all recent images to my photoalbum, you can check them here
Just select the collection "engine" and then "assemble"..  ;)

There is almost no movement, maby 1mm
Not enough to enable to any fuel flow when you attach the governor linkage.
So its not possible to start

Hmm, no reactions after a few days, can somebody please help me with my question?
Are there only buyers on this forum these days or what, the forum seems a bit quiet...  :-\

After some cruel labour and painstaking days, it all comes together  :P
Huuuraaah!! First start today  :o
The engine looks very nice, but thats my opinion  ;D I will post some pictures and videos at the end of this week.

However, 1 downside.. We had to test the 2 cilinders separately because the governor bottom lever near the right full pump is stuck.
It only moves an inch/mm , so if you hook up the hole governor linkage it even won't start in that position.
Everything is already assembled already, what can we do about this? Open up the camshaft cover  :-\ ?

Here some full pictures

O yeah...its coming together  ;D ;D
Still waiting for the heads, the valveseats are corrected to fit the new valves. Once I have received it I can re-assemble everything.
Should take no longer than a few weeks before I can fire up this baby  ::) For the curious people...
The new gaskets seem to fit, however still need to cut some rest material away. There quite large, but larger is better than to small  :P
Also the new cilinders are oke, but the waterflange is not the same as the orginal one since its a bit smaller. But should be enough to make it seal.
Around the large studs the round grove's are missing where you must place rubber rings. Should help allign the cilinder, maby its possible to assemble without it.

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Red Oxide Primer
« on: February 09, 2010, 08:26:51 AM »
Just a tip, you can also use white primer ;) only the color is different.
I prefer white because when you apply the final coat it is very easy to see what spots you have missed during painting.
Also when you use a color like green on white it does not get mixed up, also the opacity (is this right??) is much higer then red under green.
