Listeroid Engines / Re: What are you guys using for fuel tanks?
« on: June 16, 2020, 04:12:51 AM »
sounds like bs to me. we got a 1200 gallon steel tank on the backup gen at work they do next to no maintenance on it. it is 50 years old (plant was commissioned in 1968).  I can say in the last 20 years it has not been touched. we don't even add stabilizer to it.  we top it up when it gets down to 600 gallons like once every 8 years.  the inside of your fuel pump is steel, the inside of the injector is steel, the inside of the filter canister is steel, ect ect. plastic sucks.... that ibc tote in the pic is eventually going to crack from the UV rays hitting it. I wouldn't want to dump 250 gallons of $$$$ on the ground and have to clean it up.  just my 2 cents.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Does water flow around 6/1 posts?
« on: May 20, 2020, 04:21:53 PM »
to answer your question I don't think water flows around the posts. it just leaks across the heaad gasket and fills up the cavity around the stud. it can't get out the bottom and into the crankcase because of the base gasket so it leaks out of the top around the nut.I went with a copper gasket for the head gasket and homemade Garlock for the base . the coolant leaks out of the top of the stud around the nuts. I had it on and off a few times and it still leaks when it gets cold out. I may try putting a copper washer under the nuts on my head studs.

glort, you would be surprised what the Amish in my area are into, there is one here with a full line drive powered sheet metal shop. he make stainless steel triple wall chimney pipe for about 1/8th of what it costs at the regular outlets. a lot of my friends keep telling me I have got to go see his shop.  you place your order and he makes the whole chimney in 1 piece so there are no seams.

to the original poster I do a lot of heavy fab work for fun and  am an amateur machinist. I have made backhoe buckets from junk and it Is very hard to get all the holes to line up well.  the engine frame would be at a higher level of precision than that. I would recommend fabbing as you said from a combination of 1/2  and 3/8 plate for the top and sides and then before you do any machining anneal the whole assembly in an oven at around 1100-1200 overnight  to relieve any stresses before machining.  sounds totally do-able if you have a good sized mill/planer and a original block to get all the critical dimensions and bolt patterns off of.

Listeroid Engines / Re: Catalytic converter to reduce exhaust odor

I also hate the smell of diesel, I hate it when I get stuck behind a big truck when I am on my motorcycle going up a grade and you just have to smell it stinking. That being said I haven't' been bothered by my 8/1 when it is running the whole house during power outages. It does seem to be more offensive when I am running the house on the lister and the outside air is real cold and dry like -15*F.  I like glorts' idea. If I get bothered by mine I will just build a stack and get the emission up above me. seems like that was the low tech solution all through the industrial revolution for coal fired mills and such. For what it's worth I do have the listerish recommended 3'X4' brick below ground exhaust box built. it is absolutely astounding how quiet it is. you can kneel down on the ground and put your ear up to it and barley hear the exhaust.

Listeroid Engines / Re: DES 8/1 generator build

I am using a 10kw ST head. I have converted all my light bulbs to LED and since that change have seen flicker when the well pump kicks on. I wired an AVR into the 10kw head and have a switch so I can flip it back to the harmonic winding and resistor if I want. I seem to get less flicker and voltage drop with the AVR. I also watched the waveform with my oscilloscope and it is a much better wave form with the AVR.

I  thought I would give an update. I just passed over 110 hours on the generator now. it only gets run when the power goes out.  the cyl head still weeps coolant even with a new head gasket. It is a small amount and I don't really worry about it.  The power went out yesterday and the lister ran the whole house  ( all lights tv, computer, coffee pot, well pump, fridge, beer fridge, other beer fridge, freezer, washing machine, wood boiler circ pumps household of 6) for 23.5 hours and used just over 5.5 gallon of diesel.  that is a fun statistic for you.
After such a good run I was looking things over and noted that the mice had moved into my spare parts. When I bought this engine from Gary at DES I bought a whole complement of spare parts. Piston, rod, bearings, bushings injector, injection pump ect... ect… the mouse urine is very corrosive and was damaging my spares as they ate the cardboard. So all the spares had to get unboxed cleaned and moved into steel ammo cans. I painted them with fluid film as I put them away. Other that that it has been great.

Listeroid Engines / Re: adding a fuel lift pump
« on: September 27, 2018, 07:28:10 AM »
I like the squeeze bulb idea, It is nice to be able to move some fuel to bleed the system out after maintenance.  one idea I have used in the past is to take the exhaust hose on the shop vac and stuff it into the tank filler with a rag around it. the shop vac will pressurize the tank with a couple psi and you can bleed everything out real nice.

Listeroid Engines / adding a fuel lift pump
« on: September 26, 2018, 11:07:10 AM »
I want to convert my DES 8-1  homemade generator to run off the 100 gallon bulk tank that sits on the other side of the wall on the ground (lower than the engine).  This will allow me to eliminate the fuel tank I have inside the generator shed.  The problem is I will need a fuel lift pump. the first thing that comes to mind is the little 12v pulse pumps I have used on stuff for years, the problem is I don't have 12v on my generator shed nor do I want to add a battery and charging stuff. I couldn't find any of them in a 120V rating so I gave up on that. then I thought what about  the cheesy little diaphragm pumps kohler and briggs use on their engines that pulse off the crank case. I could drill  a hole in the cover and screw it on and It should pulse.  Wondering if you guys had any other ideas.

I spent a lot of time needle gunning all the painted over sand out of mine. I kept wondering why you could go to so much trouble to ram up sand molds, cast parts, finish machine and dress all the surfaces only to skip cleaning them up. They seem to spend a lot of time putting putty in holes and casting flaws and globbing paint over it all. The Only thing I  could come up with is that the workers were somehow responsible for finishing X amount of engines per day. I can imagine if he made a fuss about quality or that too many engines were expected he would immediately be fired.

You can call them back if you're talking to yourself.  It's sort of like fantasies - "Whew, thank God that was a fantasy!"

More often than not  I see a topic on a forum and type a super long detailed response. before I hit submit and get sidetracked and have to go do something. by the time I get back to the computer I start thinking about all the people who are going to disagree with what I said and be negative and I just delete the whole thing before I even post it. sort of like I am talking to myself. It feels like I get it all out of my system by typing the response and have not the  inclination to actually post it. lol. I am fighting the urge to delete this right now as a matter of fact......

"Words are like arrows,  Once loosed, you cannot call them back."

heard that proverb somewhere and can't recall where. seems appropriate.

Lister Based Generators / Re: induction motor as generator fail

I already have my listeroid with 10kw ST head so it seemed like a waste to build another generator. I sold it to my boss and he is having fun with it now.

Everything else / Re: 3 phase from single phase
« on: March 01, 2018, 07:20:41 AM »
I have static phase convertors on my lathe bridgport and air compressor. Basically just a capacitor that turns your 3hp motor into a 2hp cap start motor. they work ok but you lose 1/3 of the power. seems to work ok because old 60's stuff had way bigger motors than they needed anyway. I have an old used Allen Bradly VFD on my surface grinder and it seems to really choke the power. it is easy to bog the wheel down if you take much of a cut at all on it but it is only a 1hp cartridge grinder in the machine. if you put a pull cord on your 3 phase motor you can pull start it on normal biphase power in a pinch.

It has been my experience when "shopping" at the scrap yard that they had a set price per pound if I saw something I wanted.  obviously that price was about double what they paid when it came in the door as scrap. (fair enough).  I don't know what you should pay. It depends on a combination of how bad you want a lister and how prolific they are in the country you are in. If i was in your shoes I would say look at how much you could get a nice running one for in your area and then be willing to pay about half of that. I would go for buying both, get the indian one running and sell it. that should pay for the whole affair and you would be left with the real lister to own.
