Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Lister 12/2

Actually I'm surprised there would be much crank pressure (positive or neg) on a 2 cylinder... unlike a single cylinder the volume would remain fairly constant due to the opposed cylinders.  On my perkins diesel they connect the crank breather to the intake manifold. Wonder if that would be a good idea on the 12/2?

Thanks for the good ideas. I'll check both during the week and will let you know how I get on.

Hey all,

Long time since I've been on the forum but finally had time to complete my 12/2 lister rebuild. Everything has been done (it was seized) - pistons, valves, bearings, gaskets etc...  It's running ok but there are a few issues. Non too serious but the most annoying is oil seeping from the crank... copious amounts. I thought the crank case ran at a slight vacuum to help stop oil leaks? At least that was the case in the 6/1 I have.

Both sides are leaking at quite a rate. I installed the felt washers and set everything up by the book.

Appreciate advice on what I should look at.

thanks,

John

Original Lister Cs Engines / CAV Pump Leak
« on: October 15, 2018, 03:30:35 PM »
Hey folks,

Been a while since my last post, finally getting some time again to work on the last few things for my Lister 12/2. So even though it runs I've noticed that one of the Diesel pumps is leaking (squirting) fuel out of the port near the bottom of the pump. it's not coming out of the bottom, just that oval port on the side of the pump.

Does this mean it needs a rebuild? Anyone know of a rebuild kit for these?
Any advice appreciated

thanks,

Samo

Update on the linseed oil, I'm now living right on the coast and the old listeroid is outside with a tarp over it when not running. All parts coated in boiled linseed are perfect. All bare metal not coated now have surface rust!

The latest update is that I've tried to find a flywheel  to replace the repaired one that's been butchered but no luck. So in the end I've bought a second 12/2 that's not in good shape and will borrow the flywheels and maybe a few other parts from it to finish this engine. Unfortunately I can't pick it up until August, there's a small matter of 300km of water separating us - It's on the mainland and I'm in Tasmania.

I've not been able to get the COV out yet. Tried some more heat cycles and a large lever but to no avail. I think I'll recon one of the heads from the newly acquired engine if I can't unstick it by August.

Looking forward to your ideas on the oiling problem, there's been quite a bit of chat on the forum on that topic.

Actually I found the twin much easier to time than the single. I used the #2 piston with the WOK timing method and found that provided easy access to the insert the gear wheels, primarily because number one was at the bottom of the stroke and out of the way.

Nice posts and great inspiration!

My challenge is turning two 1840's Convict built sandstone Barracks buildings into a Bed and Breakfast, it's a multi-year project and I've I've quit paid work, sold the family home and moved from the big Island down to Tasmania with the wife. Furniture removal arrives on Monday, and after that it's on the tools for the best part of 2 years. Hopefully I'll get some down time to finish my Lister 12-2!!!

I have no mains power here at present, but the Roid fired up first turn and with the solar/battery/roid system I should do just fine!

I'd love to get a Huon Pine fishing boat to do up, but I'm under strict instructions to finish the Barracks first!

All the best for 2018 and you're respective projects

Nice photo's... So a while back I started the thread on oiling improvements because of that #2 pump lifter... both mine were significantly worn but #2 won the competition by a country mile.... I think it could do with some more oil, certainly can't hurt!

Here's a video of the 12/2 startup, you can see the left side has a compression issue, plus that repaired flywheel definitely has a balance issue. So I've got a bit more work to do once I get set up at the new place....

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the suggestion. We've packed up the house and in the middle of our move to Tasmania. I'll be off line until early January. It will probably be some time before I get the shed built and enough time to try some of these approacheson the Lister...

I was wondering about this too, on my 12/2 the flywheels exceed the base of the crankcase. I had to put it on the engine stand to fit the flywheels.

I washed mine out with apple cider vinegar, think I might have soaked it for a while and that cleaned up the rust. Then I silver brazed the pin holes. It doesn't need quite as much heat to flow nicely (with flux).
