Hey Mike,
It's good to hear that my doppleganger exists in one of my most favourite countries.
My niece spent a year or so in New Zealand....I begged her to take me along....thankfully she has good sense to go with her looks and declined!
Looking forward to posting some photos with all the toys in their proper (spacious) environs.
I met a New Zealander up here some time ago and asked how long he was staying. "For good" said he....I said "you left Paradise to come to this frozen armpit of a Country?" He smiled and said " I was chasing a Canadian Girl" The poor bastard....

This thread is ancient but I want people to know that I'm still kicking.

My right hip started to fail soon after the 2012 post to the point where I had it replaced in 2016.
But I kept all my tools and stuff, and a few weeks ago I bought a house in the country, the place has a large heated workshop/garage roughly 30' x 48',and I vaguely remember seeing a small bungalow there as well.

The closest neighbour is 1/2 a kilometer away so running the Lister shouldn't be an issue.I got a generator and frame fabbed up before I got my titanium/ceramic hip installed so there shouldn't be much to do.
Can't wait.

Ok, thanks Tom...so I have an ST 5 wired for 240 V and that would be 10.5 amps from one leg and 10.5 amps from the other, correct?

I will not vouch for that transformer being the best overall solution, (I have never had to use such a modification for a simple single-phase power supply)... but it should work fine if kept within its voltage and specified load specs.

US 240ac is sometimes referred to as split-phase because it uses a center-tapped transformer from the supply (single-phase). 240vac IS 240vac regardless. Take a look at the discussions on this forum and do a quick web search for split-phase AC.

Perhaps this diagram will help clarify: EU vs US supply transformers are going to be different in how they are tapped for a specific voltage range. Line voltage (as well as frequency) is different.

I am planning on setting my St5 to backfeed the 240 volt appliance outlet of my cottage so I can operate select 120 volt circuits,
being careful not to forget disconnecting the building from the grid of course....but noticed that when reading other posts on this
matter that pulling 120v (v1,v2) individually from the generator wired in this manner cuts the available amps by half.

So my question is ....When I pull 240 volts from v1+v2  does the same amperage restriction apply?
A newbie question maybe but I did search the forums diligently....

My belt's part number is  2RB103  Mfgr is "Jason" the PN is for a two rib "B" profile and 103 inches circumference, I don't know what profile the SOM grooves are so you would have to verify that, I'm not sure if a bonded 2 rib belt is even needed in your case you may do just as well with 2 individual v belts but that is something you will have to determine for yourself, I picked my belt up locally for $45 or so

Engines / Re: How to set injection timing VA7.5cs ? (from scratch)
« on: July 12, 2015, 08:36:50 PM »
After another failed attempt to get the pump to behave...(the fuel just ran out regardless of the flywheel position) I figure that spill timing would have to wait another day so I just bolted the fittings back to the pump..... bled the air and in 2 attempts she went.

No knocking this time...in fact I think the timing was backed off so much that even with the fuel lever down and the decompress active she didn't want to quit!In fact right at the end she shuddered and ran in reverse for a bit.
At least I have a starting point now.

Engines / How to set injection timing 7.5VAcs ? (from scratch)
« on: July 11, 2015, 11:17:32 PM »
Hi, it's been a couple of years but I finally started work on my engine.

It had a pronounced knock when ran so I checked the timing & it seemed to be a little advanced,( I have a Lister manual).

My first time so I removed the pump (carefully) then I saw the access port.....nuts.

Anyhow I retarded the timing a bit 1/2 turn and bolted it back on, it fired up and ran half heartedly for 30 seconds then quit.

So now I went to set the spill timing properly and I can't get the pump to jive with the flywheel....it's at TDC and the fuel spills like it's supposed to but when I advance the flywheel a few degrees the fuel doesn't stop....it behaved when I checked it initially. So I figure I pulled a bonehead move some where, I just hope I haven't screwed it up too badly....

Edited to add...

It was way too hot yesterday so it was good I quit & slept on it.Some reading led me to the side of the pump body that has a "sight" hole where the plunger can be seen and there is a line on it that shows the upper/lower limits of it's travel..... from what I read it's good that I didn't advance the timing too much as that can damage the  pump, the travel seems to be in the ballpark now.

At last I have found the time to continue my work on my VA! While waiting for some tune up parts to arrive I had a look at the cooling shroud....it appears that the fan/flywheel has to come off first if I want to paint it easily, otherwise it will get painted as it sits....

Better late than never.....just saw this thread probably because while you were getting your shoulder replaced I was having mine repaired too!
Hope you are healing well, I had a torn rotator cuff fixed with some "tuneups" done at the same time, still not back to regular stuff but did a few small jobs on my VA and going to physio 3x week, must be a longer recovery for you though?

Got up & around today so decided to tackle the fuel tank as it was leaking from the shutoff valve, an old piece of junk that was handy I guess, got a proper replacement and will strip/paint it.

I didn't know there were 3 types of bases for the SOM, when I am able I'll take some measurements of my Chinese ST head and look into one of those, was planning on making a custom base for my generator  now I'm not so sure.....

*** UPDATE #2 ***

I played a bit more with the settings.
I retarded the timing by another 1/2 turn on the IP tappet. (for a total of 1.5 turns)
and also reduced the injector pressure by 1/4 turn taking the pop pressure down from 220 BAR to 175 BAR.
(3030 psi to 2625 psi)

Got some nice results...

- Very quiet combustion
- No loss in power
- Still easy to start

Even under full load the engine is smooth and quiet with minimal thumping on the power stroke.

I am happy with the results at this point and will leave these settings in place.

Fantastic! My 7.5 VA has a similar sound too, when I'm able to start work on it I'll keep this thread handy.
