Listeroid Engines / Installing an electric tach on a 6/1
« on: March 15, 2014, 06:19:56 PM »
Hello All
Last week I posted a question, asking if anyone had any experience with hooking up a tach. Three people responded and I want to thank you all.
Since the posting I spent part of the week trying to figure out and hook up an old Peterbuilt tach on my 6/1.  I took the Indian Alt apart and soldered a wire on the stator and put it out through the housing with a separate terminal. Then came the fun of synchronizing the tach to the engine speed. In the back of the tach are 10 tiny rocker switches which had to be played with using a hand held tach to get the speed right. The only thing left for me to do is come up with a mounting bracket.  At present its mounted inside a big flash light housing to protect it.
My only hope is that perhaps this information will be useful to someone.  I took a few pictures and am going to try to include them with this posting.

God Bless You'all

Hello
Just want to write a thank you to all of you that answered my post last Sunday evening. The nut that I found in the sump
was from the oil breather on the inspection door. What  a relief that was, no tear down was needed.  The vibration was being
caused by a couple of welds that were broken under the frame, a relatively easy fix.

Thank Y'all Again

Hi 38 ac
I never even thought to look at the inside of the cover where the breather is bolted.
I will do that first thing in the morning. Will still have  to deal with the vibration issues.
Thank  You

Hi Case
Thanks for the reply, yes I did remove the belt and then ran it for a few minutes throttling it up and down, but
couldn't  identify where  it was  coming from.  There was no unusual  noises coming out of her.
Thanks

Hi Mike
Thanks for the reply,  I've read some of your past posts and remember that you  have a Metro. Is yours a single cylinder? And if so have you ever had the idler gear and counter weight area apart?
Thank  You

Hi Ronmar
Thank you for the reply, but the three nuts that you described are not the case, all three are easily seen. The rod nuts are much larger
and the dipper is in place. The nut that I found in the sump is a 1/2" or 13mm the thread size is about 5/16"
After sending the first post, I went out and split some wood will deal with it all in the morning, but still hoping someone will be able to point me in a right direction.
Thank  You Again

Listeroid Engines / In service 6/1 Metro, picked a vibration.

Hello
I'vo got a 6/1 Metro that is our prime supplier of power for going on two years.  Problem is as follows, late last night the exhaust
stared to sound a bit ragged and engine seemed to be vibrating more then usual but without any of the normal carboning up sounds.  Early this morning both of these symptoms had worsen so I shut her down.  Upon pulling the cover and draining the oil I found a 1/2''
nut laying in the sump.  At this time I have not been able to visually see where it came from. The little 5 by 7 manual doesn't show
much.
Any body got any ideas, I sure would appreciate some input before tearing it down.

Thank You

Hi Again Billy
Just went on Ebay and searched for the Battery Desulfators, there are quite a few but the one that looks most desireable is
# 110774452977  for 129.95 , check it out.
Hope this information will help you.

 Hi Billy
Just read your message, request for the picture.  Don't know exactly how to go about sending the picture but I will get some
outside help within the next few days to solve that.
Back to your post, the bad cell that you spoke of may yet have potential so don't give up on it yet. I did not speak of it in my
original post, but I also went through a little bout with some of the cells in one half of the battery. The solution came through
doing some research on and obtaining a Battery Desulfator. As mentioned in the previous post, both halves of the battery have
digital volt meters showing the level of charge. After hooking up and using the desulfator for a few hours a day over the period of
a week the weak side started to show noticeable improvement. It is my intention to run this unit for a few all day sessions on both
of the banks, but so far my time hasn't allowed for it. These Desulfators will not work on a shorted out cell - battery. There are a few companies selling them, look on Ebay first and then Northern Tool etc.

Hello
On the topic of fork lift batteries.
Some months back I got blessed with a big 28" x 36" thirty volt, fork lift battery.  The off grid system that I am running is using a Trace DR series 12 volt inverter.  So in order to use the big battery which consisted of 15 two volt batteried that were all connected together with lead terminals accross the tops. I took the time to cut enough bars loose to make two separate banks consisting of seven batteries each and holding 14 volts in each bank. I drilled and taped the needed studs 5/16" to attach the cables. I built a small connection block and put two cut off switches, one for each bank and also hooked up two seperate digital dc meters to allow monitering the battery voltage. And yes there is one two volt battery left over that is not being used, its a spare if ever needed. Now some may be thinkiing you can't possibly be using 14 volt batteries it will burn everything up, well think again, a normal car alternator puts out between 14.2 - 14.6 volts when charging properly. My Trace inverter with the `12 volt battery bank was topping the batteries off at 14.3 - 14.5 volts before going into the float mode.  This battery has been working properly for months and I will say its the perfect way to go if you can find one.  ::)

Hi Billswan
Thanks for the input. I have tried attaching weights to the spokes, so far to no avail.  However,  just bought a box of oil based clay and borrowed an ounce scale from a friend, so thats the dirrection that I'll be heading in the next few days.
Thanks again

 Hello All
I have a new 6/1 metro with an electric start package, have had it running about a dozen times in one or so minute clips.
Problem is it has real bad vibration, showing all the signs of being out of balance. So far I have been playing with attaching and moving weights, first on one wheel and then on both, to no avail.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what was the fix, and the long term end result. Any help with this matter will be greatly apricated.
Thank You
Fudgie
