Mark.
[/quote]And what a horrible thing they were, installed four of these on lister ts3's if I remember right and in two years of test runs only all of them failed with open circuit aux windings.

Looks in reasonable nick for its age,did you start this by hand or by battery?.Reason for asking is that it may have lost its residual magnetism and a battery start is a sure fire way of restoring it,before you do this, make sure the dc brushes (the ones that bear on the commutator,ie the segmented bit) are free to slide in their holders.24 volts by the way.

Before you go putting 12v on things have a look at that AVR,two of the leads from it go to the brushgear and I think it is polarity sensitive. If its terminals are marked that will give you your pos and neg,It is worth doing some 'pre flight checks',clean the sliprings with fine glasspaper as they develop a kind of hard glaze when stood for years, check that rectifier out using a multimeter or if not available a battery and bulb (that will also get you your polarity if its any good).Worth checking the choke for continuity as they do go open circuit and check the two suppressor capacitors to make sure they are not dead short.Run it up and then if no output you can try flashing the fields. Also worth mentioning is the AVR,if this is faulty it usualy results in high output voltage, not low or none.

Try tractor spares depts.,fitted to Massey Ferguson,IHC etc. Also most perkins engines on plant  and generators. Please be aware that they come in various thread sizes and flow rates,I think the one best suited to your needs are the type that were fed from a small resovoir kept topped op by fuel return/injector dribble.

My own near miss was not with a Lister but a Rolls Royce C8TFL.Same old story, unzipped cardigan. The fan was only guarded by 1 1/2 inch mesh.I can only remember sitting on the floor 12 feet away in a daze wondering where my shirt and cardy had gone!.Luckily nothing broken( except customers rad) but very sore and next day I was black from neck to waist. It gives me the creeps to even think about it now.
Back to Listers, the shaft guard on the smaller LD's etc was an open ended cylinder attached to the timing cover by three lugs, most of the genset ones where similar but where heavier and had a hinged lid over the end of the shaft. These should not be difficult to fabricate from a photo (anyone got one?).The shaft on a 6/1 is more difficult ,I did wonder if something could be made from the free wheeling bit of a PTO guard that could be pushed over the shaft collar once the engine is running.

Generators / Re: Rewiring Allam generator

Looking at that diagram I don't think there is much you can do with it,some transformer controlled machines had a few tappings or an adjustable air gap but these only gave about 5% variation and not the 50% you are looking for.7.5kva three phase output on a portable machine may seem a bit odd but I have seen these operating floor finishing machines on sites where no TP supply was available.
Allam generators were manufactured in Southend-on-sea,Essex.I think they went bust about 1979 or 1980.

That little lot should keep you all out of mischief for a bit !.It will be interesting to see how people go about bringing the SOM sets up to 60Hz.

Thanks, That is prettymuch a given around my home at any time:)  Neighbor 2 doors up the road nearly had a home invasion last year.  I say nearly, because being the carefull man that he is, he met the nighttime knock on his door with a gun in his hands and shot one of the invaders thru the door as they tried to push it in...

I wish we were allowed to do that.

You could try phoning or emailing Cummins generator technologies at their Stamford Lincolnshire address,I would imagine they still have all the Newage Engineers archive material.

I think these were transformer controlled, have a look under the back end cover,be carefull removing this as its cast and surprisingly heavy.
