Hi Spencer,

please clarify.

This is a YES or NO question...

Q: Because you found potentially damaging ash in your system after running WMO, does that mean that EVERYONE will have the same  results ?

thanks kindly,
veggie

Yes

Ball bearings not hardened then, chrome bores not hard .
You have not used WMO long term ,you have not done any testing on any of the aspects of wmo or it's use ,but you are an expert on the subject.
Either you provide some factual answers or just go away and move on with your life
This is a forum for every one not just for people that agree with you.

This an indication to how abrasive WMO ash is ,as vacuum cleaners which are designed to suck dust and last years, only last a few months

Have you tried gluing some to some paper & seeing how effective it is as a sandpaper?

Burn WVO instead of WMO! It will produce a lot less ash.

white powdery ash coating fire tubes or else stack temperature getting to
dangerous levels because of poor heat exchange. Wondering if anything can be
done to extend the time between service.

was just surfing the net for oil vaporising and came across this on a forum,I thought it might be of some interest.
Lots of forums with the topic of wmo, not any good reports so far.

This story is in several threads already so I will try to shorten it. Dole, the Fruit Company tried mixing and burning waste Oil in their Diesel Generator Sets that run the Refer Units on Refrigerated Containers.

A white crusty residue started to plug up the Injectors on their Engines and the expense of repair got above the savings in burning the Waste Motor Oil.

Motor Oil has additives and such that are supposed to inhibit burning and are not in of themselve fuel; they can not be filtered out.

Look at the post for the 6/1 SOM engine. It is on you tube. I just posted to make sure everyone knew there was another engine. Mike DD

Is it this one....????

That's my Lister 6/1  ;D ;D ;D ;D
It's also for sale, complete as in the video plus some spares  :)
It's going on ebay unless some one on here is interested.

bob,
I would like to use a slow speed diesel ,as if the oil vaporiser was reliable and controllable I see no reason not to run it for 24/7 as I do with my heater/boiler this time of the year.
It would be a CHP system which would possible see me not having to use my heater/boiler any more.
As my inverter also decided to fry it's self just like the last one and my battery banks very old it would mean I could still have power 24/7.
Some thing like my Lister running with an extra oil sump capacity running for months at a time between repairs would be very satisfying.
Any engine running for month at a time all most none stop would be satisfying  ;D
I can get as much oil as I can take and so far this winter I have burnt over 5000 litres of the stinking crap.

I thought it might be easier to use a petrol engine, but to start I might just try feeding it in to a couple of different engine types and see what happens.
My parents always used to tell me they knew best! so I am not going to try and reinvent the wheel.
Two parts to this project, firstly build a basic vaporiser, secondly feed vapour into an old petrol engined generator
Wouldn't it be easier to burn the vapour as it is, which possibly might contain water and other contaminants, rather than condensing it with the possibility of producing and storing an unstable fuel?

As vaporising WMO at the moment looks like the only option, and as the gas or fuel coming off should be much cleaner than burning WMO in a diesel as it is, I am going to try making a vaporiser.
As in earlier posts I have spoken about my WMO burners and one of those is a vaporising pan burner, I suppose I'm already vaporising oil to a gas every day. ;D
A few times when I have switch it off to change the now full of crap vaporising pan, I have not let it cool down enough and when I  tip in the kero in to the cleaned pan I get lots of smokey vaporised kero.
When at arms length I drop in a match - BOOM!  I'm still here, so building and using a vaporiser is not going to kill me. ;)
As my mate lister-jp2 says a drip feed of oil I think is a good idea.
My vaporising pan heater is very simple and basically is just a frying pan with a metering pump slowly feeding the pan with oil.
To start it, first light with kero and wait until the pan gets hot then switch on the feed pump, it's now self perpetuating.
It's not now burning the oil as such but the vaporised oil above the pan, so if you heated the pan with a heating element (cooker hob) and did not light the vaporised oil  you could then send that vapour to an engine and there you have it! Easy really!!  ;D ;D ;D

evening
wmo ash
forgive me if it has already been dismissed as not the problem/cause. "nix alba", "philosopher's wool" or "white snow" what ever you want to call it burnt zinc?
cheers needenginerunnin

Hi needenginerunnin,
Nice to hear from a fellow brit.  :)
I see from your location you may know a bit about glasshouse manufacturer, as lots of the glasshouses where made in your location.
As we live in a area where there used to be small holding and my dad use to also farmed one we had masses of galvanised metal from dismantled glasshouses .
Nasty to weld with white fluff, poisonous gas, but free  ;D
The white ash from fully combusted lubricating oils is just like flour, dry and fine.
Cheers

Billswan,
I did not bother to read any more posts on the subject as when you start looking there are lots of forums with the same old stuff, but just thought that post was interesting as it was a big American company.
Interesting  about the additives. ::)

« on: February 01, 2011, 06:55:53 PM »
Actually Spencer petrol engines is probably the next step. As wood gas and methane continue to become more popular like solar and wind energy has then petrol engines will follow. There are probably a 1000 lister engines in Colorado pulled form oil fields ran in Canada of natural gas. These are mostly air colled so thery will not be the first choice for CHP systems. That is something that is really catching on big with the population. When you look at harvesting energy from the entire system the cost is more efective. Creating electricty to power the lights, heat to warm the house and hot water to keep the hot tub warm. The total package. So if you find the need to sale some of you items take advantage of the people looking in the US for what you have to offer. With the containers coming over it make it possible for people over here to get one. No matter where the furture steers us there will still be the love of the slow speed engines for the collector.

DD,
Thorsen has first refusal on the som ,please make me an offer and buy every diesel and genny I have.
It's all going, and I will stick it on ebay.
