Listeroid Engines / Re: slow running on start, then slowing down again
« on: September 11, 2023, 01:39:12 AM »
ok, more jackass questions from someone who obviously doesn't know what's going on.

After a batch of cleaning up carbon (reset valves, cleaned piston top), putting all back together, attaching a different sort of alternator, I've got a weird thing where it won't actually *get going*.  check out this short video of it firing, but not getting up to speed:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/V7vGNtFD4kE

then, after maybe 5 minutes, and I hold open the fuel line (hold back the gov) it gets going, but then randomly slows down??
here's that video:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/O0mSJEJDqcU

couple other facts:  I haven't run veg oil in this thing in a year or two, the water tank was disconnected, I haven't changed the fuel filter in years, but it's only had good diesel going through it... and that new alternator is an experiment, I don't know, could it be doing some sort of extra drag?

Open to being told obvious things.

"Open to being told obvious things"  "I haven't the fuel filter in years" Change the filter bud especially if it has ever had veggie oil in it at any point

Listeroid Engines / Re: Tips for installing a glow plug

 Yes they are!

I bought mine with 133,000 miles on it with the engine blown up, half of it was in the trunk LOL

Former owner didnt understand belt driven overhead cam turbo diesels and drove it with a bad turbo till it let go. Engine had been hydro locked due to oil pouring out of the turbo's very bad bearings (It had 1/2 an inch of shaft play!)

Now has a new cylinder head and turbo, bone stock but is a quick little car and im geting 48mpg on the hyway :)

Horsefly;
I've got one of those, it's great. I'm just adding the glow plugs as well because I can!
Today I bored thru the COV plug in steps to fit the VW TDI glow plug. It's still in the lathe waiting for me to find a 10x1.0 mm tap.
I tried to post a pic, maybe I'll get it figured out eventually.
Ahhhh yes the VW TDI :) I have a 2003 Jetta TDI that is my 124mi daily driver, nice little bugger I like it a lot! I was thinking the same about VW glow plugs also :) (I have a few from when I replaced them a few months back)

My (Lister Petter) LPA3 uses a "Heater Plug" P/N 327523 Very handy stand alone unit.

Is a large coil that gets red hot and is screwed into the intake manifold, much the same style as Deutz uses.

Things I want to Buy / Re: SR1 Exhaust Manifold Needed
« on: February 22, 2011, 08:46:54 PM »
Does your engine have seperate manifolds for inlet (cast aluminium)  and exhaust (cast iron), or is it the earlier all in one cast iron manifold.

If it is an all in one manifold then a manifold from a LD1, LR1, SL1 engine will also fit the SR1 engine.

Sorry about the late reply, yes it has seperate manifolds, intake aluminum cast iron exhaust

Engines / Re: Lister SR-1 exhaust valve seat regrind question.
« on: February 22, 2011, 08:35:16 PM »
I have some pitting around the lip of the exhaust seat on my head, are there limits to the depth that this can be reground? In a ST manual it says the exhaust valve can be .033" to .045" below the combustion surface of the head. Would .045" be the absolute limit or can I go farther, in order to get past the pitting? It would be a shame to have to junk the head.
Thanks in advance
Bud

I know this is an old post but there is/was a New Old Stock SR1 Cylinder head for sale on E bay if you need it ($300 ish). I had it saved as I have a SR1 myself

Original Lister Cs Engines / Re: Dating a CS
« on: March 07, 2010, 10:35:39 PM »
Hello all,
I've got an 8/1 CS start-o-matic with the engine plate No. 14548112 and, from looking at the engine dating pages, my engine was made in 1935. Am I correct?

Where did you go for a date?

A nice insinuated shed, a fine bottle of red diesel with a gallon of rotella on the side?

LOL sorry I could not resist

What happened from burning the Jet A???

The Jet-A does not have very good lubricating qualities. The injection pumps internals on my LPA3 are scored/worn along with pistons & rings.

I have seen this a lot with airport diesel equipment when too much Jet-A is used in place of red diesel. Dot get me wrong Jet-A is ok to run as long as you add a lubricant in to the mix.

We had a diesel Jet-A fuel truck that went through 2 injection pumps in a years time because the operators were too lazy to drive across the airport to use the diesel pump.  Instead they used the trucks Jet-A all the time to fill the diesel tank.

Now I work for the military building UAV's that have turbo diesel power plants. The engine provider had to modify the injection system on the engines to be able to put up with the use of Jet-A.
