Title: Lister TS3 Fuel Spill Timing
Post by: ListerTS3 on September 10, 2018, 10:44:57 AM
Folks,

I have been trying & failing to time the pumps using the spill method. I just cannot get it to work. I am rebuilding the engine so I am using the original parts, The marks for TDC & FP on the flywheel are correct, I know this because I used TDC marks to set the valve head clearance on each piston. This is what I do:
1. Remove internal spring, seat & valve from body, re-tighten the body to pump being checked.
2. Push prime lever once to fill the pump, diesel wells out.
3. I bring the piston to TDC on ignition (power) stroke.
4. I go forwards revolution approx 2-3 inches, then start to go anti-clockwise until such time as the fuel starts to go back down into the valve.
5. When I lock at the flywheel FP mark at this point, the FP mark is at least a 1/4 rev past the arrow mark on the fan-shroud.

If I add a shim then it makes virtually no difference ( the page says 1 deg per .127mm shim). the difference is too large for a shim to correct. There is something fundamentally wrong.

I have tried this too many times & it never works out. Is there something that I am missing OR does anyone have a video on how to do it, I cannot find any relevant Lister videos on YouTube.

Does anybody know what is going wrong here or  has anybody got a video one their own engine ? Would appreciate any help.

thks

Ensure your fuel rack is fully open, always work in the direction of rotation, turn the flywheel until it STOPS flowing...This is the start of the injection pressure cycle, the inlet to the IP is just closed...

By all means, reverse rotation until the fuel starts flowing, but the point that it stops flowing when spill timing must be in the forward direction of rotation(backlash in cam gears etc)...

There are many ways to approach this...

This is how I do it.
gravity flow your fuel supply (I use a small elevated tank), Remove all air from the system, roll crankshaft in direction of normal rotation until fuel flow stops. Make sure the fuel rack is in the run position.
It helps to use a capillary tube or an old fuel line to clearly see the exact point at which fuel stops. One other snafu that comes up is making certain that you are on the compression stroke for the cylinder being adjusted - both valves will be fully closed.

Thanks
Do you connect a pipe & have it bent at 90 deg away from pump so that spill is not going everywhere ?
Also should the fuel be spilling all the time (except at FP) or just during rotation ?

Sean,

Read points 9 to 13 in your procedure that you posted in your first post.... Pay particular attention to the direction of rotation that is required... The fuel STOPS flowing/spilling at the FP mark.... As to whether you point the pipe up, down, left or right, it makes no difference to the procedure, only the amount of clean up after...

Hi EdDee,

I got the pump timed, the manual is incorrect when it stated:

9. Ensure the fuel pump rack is in the run position by removing a cylinder fuel pump housing door & manually moving the fuel pump rack towards the gear end.

This is incorrect & the source of all my issues, the pump rack needs to be turned towards the flywheel end, this is the run position. Once I had discovered that, I had them timed perfectly. It was only an off chance I turned one that way out of desperation.

Or you have the flywheel and the gear swapped !! ::)
