Title: What size generator head?
Post by: ronsmith on May 13, 2012, 01:44:59 AM
What size generator could I belt to my 4.5 mini-petter for direct AC power? What would be the max size I could get away with.

2HP per KW...  That is 2 1/4KW so perhaps a 3KW head...

Max size you could get away with? Anything up to 20kW should be fine. Of course all the extra weight and capacity will just be wasted and some minor efficiency loss will be incurred. We regularly double the genhead size with most of our kits - room for growth or changes in the system.

Depends but 1-1/2  to 2 HP per KW.
Depends if it's intermittent and varying loads or stead load at max capacity of the  generator .
Starting high inrush loads such as reciprocating compressors or just lights?

Go largeer on the generator than the engine HP. Operating a generator at full rated current continuous with more motor than generator is not a good idea.
