Hi all,
This isn't really a slow-speed diesel, but this seems like the most appropriate forum I can find for this topic. I've run across a Deutz F1L-208D single-cylinder diesel for sale. It's NOS military surplus. Apparently the US military has lots and lots of these. I've read that they were/are used to run small compressors and heat small buildings (???). Looks like they were also marketed as inboard motors for small sailboats. From what I can tell, it looks very similar to the Yanmar-type single cylinder engines.
I found some specs here: http://website.lineone.net/~trucks.morley/Products/Deutz/fl208.htm
Wondering if anyone has experience with this particular engine. I'm considering it for a diesel motorcycle conversion.

I think that engine would be a neat engine to collect, but would think twice about that engine being a possible motorcycle engine candidate unless you like it. For an 8hp engine weighing close to 150 lbs in a motorcycle, I would lean more towards the Yanmar/Changfa type 4-10hp versions (around 100 lbs with internal charging system). I don’t know what type of motorcycle you are thinking of building as I’m building a Bio-Diesel motorcycle also. I just bought this fine piece of Russian equipment with the Hatz 2g40 engine. Please note the fine use of chain link fencing material as an exhaust system. See:

I also have a Briggs/Daihatsu turbocharged engine waiting for a home in a motorcycle/something, also have two of these. See:

Anything I could help you realize your project, feel free to call, I’d be more than happy to help. I have a friend in SF that wants me to build him a Bio-Diesel powered motorcycle as well.
As for a drive, I would stick with a CVT type belt torque converter as a manual transmission in a Motorcycle with a Diesel engine leaves a lot to be desired.

Why buy 1 deutz when you can buy 20?

Heck, lets all group together and buy the lot, I'd take 3 or 4.

I guess I'd prefer a Yanmar or clone as well, but it seems they're not easy to find anymore.
