Title: Another Anchor found today
Post by: potter on May 18, 2008, 01:10:34 AM
Found this 8/1 water cooled today, the owner said I could have it if I could move it.  It had been sitting out in the weather for the past 20 years without the head on.  So, I had little hope of freeing it up.  By the time I hauled it home I noticed that the cylinder had popped loose and all was free.  All I have to try to free up is the piston in the cylinder.  Here's a few pics:

Nice find Harry!   Is the head there too?  No problem freeing up that piston, since you can get to both sides of it.  If you go to the proper lengths to free up the rings in the cylinder using various penetrating oils (see smokstak forum) you can gently turn the flywheels to raise up the cylinder, put some 2x4's under it and then gently turn them the other way to bump the cylinder down, using the con rod to try and loosen it.  If not, then you'll have to take the bottom end of the con rod and try a round wooden post approximately the same size as the piston and maybe 6 or 8 " long on top tapping it with a large hammer.

It may take awhile but that chromed cylinder won't have rusted too much and shouldn't be a problem.
Stan
Congratulations.

Thats from a START-O-Matic and it looks like you have the solenoid still attatched.  You might go back and ask that guy if he has the base or gen end laying around anywhere.  The base would come in very handy for setting up a generator.

Where did you find this guy?

Good Luck.

Mean...the base is already there, that's what it's sitting on.  I'd give a kidney for one of those.

The original head was missing but he had another engine completey taken down in bad shape, i will try to save the head from this.I am missing 1 nut for head and 2 small studs and nuts.I did try bumping the piston loose with the weight of the flyweels it did move down about 1" then stuck fast i have now taken cylender off and inverted and filled with fuel to try to loosen.
The air cooled 8/1 i found a few weeks back also had the base but inverted left to right was offered a spare base but turned it down :'(.

It huffs and it puffs but it will not blow its piston down >:(    I've rebuilt it as best as I could using parts from the three engines, all in bad shape with a new pump, injector, push rods, and high pressure line from Central Maine Diesel.  I get a little white smoke but that is all  :'(    I have checked the spill timing, looks good at about 18 degrees before t.d.c.   I never removed the cam or gears so timing is good.  I did lap in the valves, the only thing I can put it down to is loosing compression on the miss matched cylinder and rings,  although I can only manage to turn it through three compression strokes.  Any thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Christopher

Warm everything you can.  Hot water changed a couple of times or so to give it the best chance to go.  Hot air gun or gas torch to heat the inlet air.

A dash of petrol (5 -10%) in the fuel (just to get her firing - then drain and refill the tank and reprime).

Are you sure all the air is purged from the system?

Someone else to wind her over?  Or at least take a turn.  Can't be too much stopping her from going.

Regards, RAB

Thanks I have bled the lines about five times, injector gives a nice loud creak also a nice mist when pulled, also tried a little oil in cylinder when injector was out,air temp is 85F  :-\ i'll give a little gas a try thanks.

Shove an electric paint stripper down the air intake and leave it there while you crank it over.

Thanks guys it took all of the warming tricks plus gas to get it going, after running for about 10 min the compression more than doubled and she will now start on first compression stroke. ;D

Nice looking engine Potter....you're not going to get a whole lot of thermosyphon out of that setup though, maybe put the radiator up a bit.
