Documents currently in-print can be purchased at Lister retail. Out-of-print volumes can be purchased at an average $20-$25, or these can be scanned to pdf files about $10 per, or reprinted into booklet form $15-$20. The pricing is intended to cover only the costs for the service paper/reproduction/digital storage, not to generate revenue based on the document content. Intent here is to keep a comprehensive library of service information accessible for the old Lister stuff, especially obsolete machines. I have found the time to get this stuff put up on the web-site so thought this forum an appropriate place to offer them. If you have any documents not in the list, I would be interested in trading to fill in the gaps.

Hi Emerald,

You wouldn't happen to have a workshop/repair manual for an ST2, by any chance? I do not exactly know the year of built, or anything alse for that matter except that it is a 2 cylinder ???. But the serial is 131785ST2. RPM and HP also not known.

Any info you have would be welcome in my attempt to get this engine running again. Can you possibly mail it to lister@rochemont.nl

Thanks very much
James

Hello,

From your serial # your machine was built in 1963. The full specs for the ST series are readily available, I can email some pages if you like. Same goes for the manuals.

Excuse me guys, this relates specifically to a GTC 6-1 lister "clone", (current Indian production, TRB type, external oil pump, dip-splash oiled, CS valve operational). I've got one that's got less than 8 hours on it and it has an intermittent squallerin' noise it its guts. The noise tends toward becoming continuous (getting worse). My judgement is that this is a rod bearing that's too tight (I don't see what else could make this squallerin' noise). So, I opened 'er up and there seems to be no diametrical movement at the rod, slight side movement, but nothing up n down. (It's a shimmed rod cap)  Anyway, since y'all have got some Lister books I wonder what's the rod-to-journal clearance recommended in a genuine Lister 6-1?  I can fake this - and make the clearance .003" (that's my personal opinion of what it ought to be), but if you guys know, based on your factory books, what the factory said, I'd sure appreciate knowing. If somebody'd email me a few pages related to fitting a shimmed rod that'd be great too. (I'm old and an experienced millwright, I've seen lots of machinery, but asking questions is always a good first step.) Thanks, Phaedrus

From the Lister instruction book regarding conrod big end bearings (CS types);

clearance should not exceed .003". So that the two halves of the bearing shall register firmly one against the other, the Big End cap is made to draw up to within .002in. of the top half. This "nip" should be measured with a feeler guage after assembly, and before the Big End nuts are tightened. New Big End Bearings will require a certain amount of hand scraping when being fitted.

From the Lister data book - technical data page 44;

Main journals wear limits: .008"
Rod journals wear limits: .007"

Page 42 in the same manual is difficult for me to read due to age/wear. If anyone has this document and can copy us page 42 that would add some important crankshaft size and machining data.

Hope this helps,

Gary

This is some additional Big End bearing instruction taken from Lister manuals for the CS 6-1.
Connecting Rod Big End Bearing

These are steel back white metalled shells in the bottom half and lead bronze in the top half and must not be scraped or touched up in any way. The running clearance with the crankpin should not exceed 0.003 in. (0.076 mm.).
When assembling the bearings on the connecting rod it is most important that the backs are scrupulously clean and that there is interference between the bearing and the bore of the connecting rod. This interference, or nip, is measured by placing the bearing in the connecting rod, tightening both bolts to the normal extent, then slackening one bolt only and measuring the corresponding gap in the rod at the parting line. This gap should be between 0.004 in. (0.102 mm.) and 0.006 in. (0.152 mm.).
Ensure the dipper is secure before replacing the connecting rod cap; it is screwed in place and 4 dots punched into the circumference prevent turning. Place a cork over the end of the dipper whenever working in the crankcase to avoid injury to the hands.
Tightening torque for big end nuts is 55 lb. ft. (7.6 kg. m.)

Emerald and anyone else that may be able to help,
I have been trying to locate maintenance schedules for some obsolete Lister engines for a friend of mine.  He is using them on his farm as standby generators and would like to follow a routine maintenance schedule to make sure they are ready to perform when needed.  They run intermittently, sometimes for a couple of days, but mostly they run for short periods during power outages.  I  don't know the serial numbers yet but he tells me that they are the following models,  HA3, HR3, SR3 and TS3.  I think he got them from a government surplus sale.
They are working OK but he hasn't really done any maintenance other than checking the oil every so often.  He is concerned that there may be some issues with these engines that require special attention so he wants to set up a schedule of regular maintenance.

I have been able to find the operators manual for the TS3 which has a routine maintenance section, but have had no luck with the others.  All he needs is a basic recommended maintenance schedules which would probably be located in the owners manual.  Unfortunately he is not "Computerized" and does not have connectivity to the internet.  So being the nice guy I am, I volunteered to check it out for him.  Little did I know at the time that it would be so difficult to find info on these long serving engines.

Do you have access to these manuals and if not, do you know where they might be available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Hooty

I could really do with the manual for an old engine covered in the topic: http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=1795.0
Apparently it's an old LR (or SR), but if you'd be good enough to have a look at the photos at http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/5180338 you probably have more idea than me.
If you could e-mail them to me at "chairman 'at' dhcc.org.uk", I'd be extremely grateful.
Thank you.

Gary,

Quote
Main journals wear limits: .008"
Rod journals wear limits: .007"

At the risk of sounding pedantic, shouldn't there be an extra "0" in those? :D

Cheers,

Brian

Well,

I am guessing that this figure in the book is referring to oil clearance, not actual wear on the journal. Proper oil clearance is ultimately what determines life of the bearing besides providing clean lubrication at all times.

I looked trhough your selection of manuals.... I did not see the one for my 20/2 indian clone. I have a newer one with  TRB's from the factory. Still in all I am loking for a shop style manual. I also bought a 6/1 Metro need one for it also... You take pay pal or what.

Rob,

I do not have much collected on the Indian clones but will do some checking. Our new import engines will have manuals with them but the quality remains to be seen. They are still being held-up in India for all of our QC requirements but patience is the least we can offer up to the process. On the 20/2 can you tell me who the assembler and exporter was? At the least, we might be able to get something generic about that engine. Given the lack of an actual manufacturer and the weakness of the supply chain regarding these, it may take some doing.

Best Regards,

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your help. The manufactor is Lovson. I bought some spare parts from them last month. I spoke to Joanna, he said he would include some shop manual info in my package... nothing like that ever came. I am trying to find out the correct valve clearances & true timeing. I got the engine to run but it has a host of problems. Today I could not even get it to run, I am a bit frustrated. When it was running I was running on one cyl. mostly and was blowing black unburned fuel out the exhaust pipe. I just do not know true facts to work from. My engine did not come with any timing marks on the gears. TDC on the #1 cyl and camshaft touching the intake valve tappet is as close as I can get to timeing the engine.
Your help is most appreciated.

I got an e-mail from Lovson, they indicated an new alignment procedure for seting up the timing.
I followed their instructions and still am having troubles. I would like to hear from you on this. Were you able to uncover some new information?

Gary -

Thanks I really appreciate it.  I found a instruction & parts manual for Ashwamegh engines 12,16,20 & 25. I found it last week Memorial day I was trying out alot of the sights again this time I got lucky and Ashwamegh had this on there site. I quickly copied it and printed it. I did not know if it was a fluke or not but at least I have some current data for this engine. Aprox. 45 pages long. some of those indian web sites are not real reliable. Some days you can get on and sometimes not. So unless you get hold of a real shop manual showing torque specs and other things like that  I guess this is all I am going to have for a while.

Hi

Brand new here and only very recently aware of Lister's fine products (learning rapidly). I have a TS3A which is used to drive a pump to irrigate the golf course I work on...but, I have no information about this engine at all. If anyone has any diagrams, operators handbooks etc. I would be very happy to be enlightened...

Thanks in advance...

Hi folks,
I am newbie in this forum and just having bought Lister ST2 with start-o-matic inbuilt. Getting the system in some weeks from now and actually looking after some manual concerning that automatic Start-O-Matic. Maybe it might b wise to have manual, which is named here "312/1052   Start-o-matic   Instructions & Spare Parts book.

How could I get that manual?
It is really nice to find such sites and start discussion back and worth in various things around old machines. Nice to get into this.
